Star Trek and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

IMO the two movies are quite similar, both revive older franchises, both have that "NO WAY!!!" moment (Spock kissing on Uhura; the refrigerator), and both manage to be hugely entertaining when brain is checked at door (brain and brain, what is brain:p). I'd say they're roughly equal in overall execution & quality.
Thoughts?

Well, I liked both but they are not alike as you suggest.

Star Trek was a new version of trek, with new actors, a new creative team, and a largely different tone (Summer action flick.)

Kingdom was made by roughly the same people, with Ford back again, and in the same style as the old films (just with added stupidity)

for them to be more alike, William Shatner and the original crew would've had to come back in a film, directed by Meyer or Nimoy.

And I can't say Kingdom revived the Indy Franchise. I think Trek is back Big time, wheareas Indy was merely extended for a fourth film.

Hold the phone on that note. I haven't had time to verify this yet, but I did hear from a pretty good source Saturday that they are working on putting together Indy V. If I find out more, I post a link, but Ford did say right after Kingdom that he would be interested in doing it again.

Indy IV had not the appeal and positive reviews that Star Trek has. Indy barely made a blip on the sights of moviegoers who mostly panned it. Star Trek has positive reviews and box office appeal.

As stated, Star Trek rebuilt the franchise with new actors. Indy brought back the same old cast with the addition of teen a heartthrob.

The two films are nothing alike.

NO! Now go to your room.:vulcan:

:bolian:Oops, I forgot.. this IS your room... you started the thread.:guffaw:
LOL!
My point is that they both play fast & loose with the franchises, and mostly succeed. I like 'em both- in an over-the-top Hollywood kind of way.
Popcorn all around!:rommie:

It's hard to say if we'll get another one. For one to get made, Lucas, Spielberg and Ford all have to agree on everything. Lucas and Spielberg are all incredibly busy. Ford.....well Ford's career has been past his prime for over a decade now. of course he's coming public with Indy V.

Here's my thought - KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULLS is ten times better than STAR TREK. And it's not even the best Indiana Jones movie I have ever seen. It didn't have the humongous plot holes that marred STAR TREK.

Although I like them equally, a case could be made for your POV.
But consider the sheer lunacy of shooting Kirk out of the Enterprise instead of simply putting him in the brig, or Indy surviving what looks like a 200 MPH (or more) hurtle in a 50's fridge!

Silly silly British men.:guffaw:

Ageist much?:guffaw:

Not at all. I didn't call Ford old, or Imply that his age is a problem. Many of my favorite actors are old. Clint Eastwood is well into his 70's, and I loved Gran Torino. Look at The Shootist, an excellent Western made when John Wayne was in his 70's. A fine film

I'm saying that Ford made some terrible choices this decade in roles. Hollywood Homicide is the most forgettable movie of the decade, Firewall was decent but we've seen the same film from Ford a million times and executed far better. K-7 didn't grab much interest and bombed.

The Indiana Jones movie was his only hit, and that's because it's an iconic character.

Isn't Ford semi-retired now anyway?
I'd be suprised if he only comes back to the screen for a Indy movie.
He's a legend, and I love him

INDY 4 is the lamest of the four films in its franchise(so far). It's okay, but after a 19-year wait since the last one I was expecting much better outta Spielberg and Lucas. I don't view it the way SOUTH PARK did(i.e. a movie that betrayed and raped the very idea of Indiana Jones and tanked the entire franchise)but it doesn't even come close to being as good as the new TREK.

Absolutely right.
