Star Trek and Singleness

I suspect that the main reason is that the writers don't want to write stories of married couples, and given the reception most episodes that feature Keiko heavily got, neither do the viewers want to watch a marriage soap day out and day in.

That's not because people hate marriage. It's because people hate Keiko.

Actually I thought their romance was sweet and quite a nice addition without being on the nose and forced like Kirk's bedroom scenes.

Well other than grossly diminishing Uhura as a person and character by showing her actively sleeping her way to advancement, and making Spock a workplace sexual harasser? Because really that's what was going on there. That hanger scene? Yeah that would get anybody fired from their places of employment instantly. That one scene stripped away any and all professionalism from the two characters. While there might have been room to explore a little deep space romance, that was not how you do it. Ever.

Yeah I generally liked Spock/Uhura in ST11, but the hangar scene never sat well with me. Same as most of their material in ST12.

Having read David Mack's excellent"Typhon Pact Zero Sum Game" and "Section 31 Disavowed", I'm hoping by next years "Section 31 Control" that Julian Bashir and Sarina Douglas get married!

Maybe that's a part of it, she's certainly one of my least favorite characters too. That said, marriage or romance never seems to last. Either the couple are forced to live apart due to their jobs, or else one of the spouses/partners dies.

>Keiko

While everyone else is a cool astronaut, she was written as The Nagging Wife™: "Miles, you work too much! "Miles you don't like my cooking" "Miles you must go to the Space PTA meeting" "Miles "-- you get the point

I understand that the episode of the week format worked better if everyone is single.
I did find it a little more strange that TOS characters were all still single in the movies. Sulu had a daughter but there was no mention of a spouse (and he was a single father in the novels)
Even after TNG suggested Spock had married (Picard says he met Sarek at his son's wedding) even when Spock showed up there was no mention of a spouse (the novels have it being Saavik, which is kind of weird and icky to me, enhanced by previous novels depicting Spock as a father figure to Saavik)

I don't care for romance within the main ensemble whoever is involved. People think'll this coupling or that coupling would be great. In the event, it usually gets very ordinary very quickly.

It would actually surprise me if a large number of crewman and officers weren't single with the advent of 5 or 10 year missions in deep space.

RAMA

I believe the novelization of TMP had Kirk in a contract marriage with an admiral named Lori Ciana. That they were considering not renewing. Correct me if I'm wrong (if someone remembers), the choice was taken out of their hands as she was the second person killed in the transporter accident.

It's been a long time since I read it last, but that's how I remember it. And her being the other person in the transporter accident must have messed up Kirk for a long time afterward, even though their contract marriage had actually been arranged, as part of Kirk's promotion to admiral.

You would think Picard as a Frenchman would have married someone given all the different lives he led on TNG and in ST Insurrection!!! If only the Psi 2000 intoxication had been more effective, Picard and Crusher could have been married (alternate realities notwithstanding)
