Star Trek - $7.50 million on Monday

This movie is a flop. One thing no one is discussing is the additional $312 million dollars they paid to lure Nimoy back onto the big screen. Google it. That must be added to the $200 million film budget and the $190 million in marketing the movie has already floppily burned through with its flop like ways. A Clear and Major Flop.

And you can't forget the $5 billion they had to pay Shatner to give the Ok for his character to be recast. Now, I'm sure you are all thinking that this is a lot of money, and are wondering why they couldn't come to a money agreement to get Shatner in the movie... Google clearly states it's because they weren't willing to pay $10 billion for both a recast and a cameo.

This weekend, I'm taking 4 non-Trekkies with me to see it again and talked another into going eventually, so I'm doing my part to make our $5,702,000,000 back.

to be fair, Ebert sounded like he was a bit constipated during his writing of the review. :p
Not to mention plain wrong. He carped about the parachute scene: [whining]"Why didn't they just transport them to the mining platform...?[/whining] -- when it was said about five times that the driller disrupts transporting.

Don't get me wrong; I love the Sun-Times. We have taken a Sun-Times suburban daily paper for years. But Ebert has had some weird likes and dislikes.

I used to enjoy Ebert, mostly because of the positive reviews he gave to Hayao Miyazaki's animated movies.

Is this a joke?

You have to live in an alternate universe to believe that Nimoy got $312 million. That's beyond absurd.

Google what? I'm tired of people saying "google this" or "google that."

Provide your own sources.

If it is a joke, my apologies!

Re: Star Trek - $7.64 million on Monday

By the way, this could cross $100 on Wednesday, which would make it only the second Trek film ever to do so, unadjusted.

It's doing great. But, if you adjust for inflation, 7 of the previous 10 Trek movies have exceeded $100 million in current dollars. Shoot, even Final Frontier got $90 million in current dollars. So, it's a no brainer that this movie will exceed $100 million.

Mr Awe

I think the important point here is we are comparing 5 days to the entire gross of the other Star Trek movies...

Ya think. Of course. My point was that $100 million isn't the benchmark it used to be.

Unless they contrast the cost of making the movie with what it made adjusted for inflation, those figures are incomplete.

I was talking about adjusted domestic box office revenue. If you want to factor in adjusted budgets, sure . . .

In current dollars and for both the domestic box office and budgets, the top 3 Trek movies are:

Voyage Home made about $160 million ($212m-$52m)
Khan made about $150 million ($174m-$24m)
Motion Picture made about $140 million ($240m-$102m)

If the current movie really had a budget of around $150 million, it'll have to top $310 million to beat Voyage Home in domestic, first run profit.

Someone else can do the world wide numbers if they like.

It HAS to be a joke. Nobody can be saying shit like that without tongue planted firmly in cheek and laughing at us.

Are the "cost to make" figures adjusted?

Re: Star Trek - $7.64 million on Monday

Are the "cost to make" figures adjusted?

I'm sure they are, simply because I remember Charlie Bluhdorn's question to Harve Bennett was if he could make a better movie than TMP for less than "forty-five fucking million dollars".

Profit ratios in terms of domestic gross to budget are much lower these days than in the 1980s. Star Trek won't come close to the theatrical profits of past films in the series like The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, and The Voyage Home. Over the last 20-odd years the inflation of production budgets has far outpaced general economic inflation. But foreign box office has grown substantially and, even more importantly, so has revenue from home entertainment markets.

Also keeping in mind there wasn't really a home video market yet, so if you wanted to remember what you saw in the theater, you saw it 5 or 6 times. Today you can see it once and watch again in 5-6 months on BluRay.

Interesting, thanks--although as pointed out, today's ballgame is different in that you have DVD's and television rights and all that stuff to factor in.

Still it is good to know that Trek has and (now) always will be... popular.
