Star Trek - $7.50 million on Monday

Re: Star Trek - $7.64 million on Monday

Odo's_Bucket, as someone who's favorite Trek is Deep Space 9, I really am trying to understand--why are you so negative on this movie?

Maybe I've missed something here...

I love DS9 and is the only Trek that still holds up for me (apart from the later seasons of TNG), its confusing me to say the least.

Ds9 was quality and Trek at it's best. This new movie isn't. Besides, I've already said countless times that I hope it makes a profit. I just doubt that it will.

If your doubts were serious, then the feature film business would not be viable and almost no film would ever make a profit. You're embarrassing yourself with your ignorant posts about these matters.

You know, total cost of this movie could be $250 million for all I care. Let's say it does half as well as Iron Man, a very conservative number. Box office grosses alone would then total $291 million. (Source) It would be profitable by those numbers alone, not to mention DVD sales, marketing tie ins, and other sources of revenue, all of which can make a film profitable on their own.

Moreover, Paramount would be well positioned to capitalize on this reintroduction of Star Trek and do a sequel that could build on this audience (see X2 after X-men, Dark Knight after Batman Begins). Any way you look at it, it is now a win/win situation for Paramount.

This conversation has drifted into the absurd. This movie is a success by any metric. Case closed. :borg:

As someone who thinks the best Trek is TOS, and DS9, I have to ask why so negative?

It is going to make money. Quote me.
The movie introduces an entirely new audience to Star Trek.
It has allowed me to talk Star Trek to the normals for an estimated 60 days, without any . Some even engage me enthusiastically.
It allows for an entirely new set of 23rd century stories.

This all just seems exciting to me, as a Trekkie(r), whatever. I'm having fun. I enjoy seeing new Star Trek, and just don't see why allowing the masses into this is so bad.

It just seems like you have to work awfully hard to hate what the movie has done for the state of the Star Trek union. I'd quote Leonard Nimoy, but you know what he'd say in this case as well as I.

So far the day to day numbers for Star Trek are close to those of The Da Vinci Code in 2006, and DVC ended up making $217.5 million domestic - and Star Trek has better reviews and better word of mouth than DVC did.

Star Trek’s Monday Box Office sets a record.

One of the big tests for the new Star Trek film is if it will have ‘legs’, meaning if it can sustain itself through the summer and today we got the first indication that it can. After a stronger than expected weekend, yesterday Star Trek brought in $7.5M domestically, which is pretty good for a Monday. Comparing this to other first Mondays: Wolverine had $5.5M and Trek’s ‘benchmark’ film, Batman Begins had $6.6M. So far Trek has brought in $86.7M domestically.

Yesterday Paramount issue a statement regarding the strong word of mouth and performance of the film over the weekend. Paramount Rob Moore stated:
The spike over our initial estimates on Mother’s Day demonstrates that the combination of strong reviews and solid word-of-mouth contributed to better than anticipated attendance by families yesterday, confirming our belief that ‘Star Trek’ has a broad, multi-generational appeal.

Re: Star Trek’s Monday Box Office sets a record.

It makes me happy that they realize Trek has a broad multi-generational appeal. Sometimes on this board, people say how Trek is an adult show while I've always viewed it as a family franchise. That's how I used to watch it at least

Re: Star Trek’s Monday Box Office sets a record.

What record did it set?

Most money made on a first Monday right after the release. To reiterate thaniyo's figures:

Wolverine: $5.5million
Batman Begins: $6.6million
Star Trek: $7.5million

Wait, which begs the question: what did Dark Knight do on his first monday? It made over a billion dollars world wide.

Sorry to say it won't make THAT much!:(

I doubt it would make a billion dollars, too. That's not why I brought it up. I brought up the Dark Knight b/c putting that film into context, now suddenly I sort of doubt Trek setting a record. No doubt that $7.5 million on the first monday is a good record and a good omen, but is it still the top when a film like the Dark Knight is considered?

Re: Star Trek’s Monday Box Office sets a record.

^It has already done TDK numbers compared to previous Trek movies...:rommie:
It seems like the news just gets better with each update.:techman:
