FINAL NUMBERS UPDATE

According to final numbers, the film made $6,505,775 on Tuesday.

A 13.3% drop is a little bit larger than expected, but still a decent number.

The film is now over $93.2 million according to the final numbers. This means the film should pass $100 million by Thursday.

But for comparison, Batman Begins dropped 18.5% on its first Tuesday (to $5.4 million) and Iron Man drop 6.2% to $6.5 million.

Another box office tidbit:
The film made about $2 million internationally on Monday and $3 on Tuesday.

For reference, Wolverine dropped 15% from its first Monday to Tuesday, and that was from $5,451,023 to $4,632,575. Wolvy had made a little over 95 million by this time.

Let's talk ratio by number of screens and such...

Yeah, Star Trek is going to outpace Wolverine in the next day or so.

Domestically. I think Wolverine leads Trek internationally by a fair amount.

Re: Star Trek - $6.45 million on Tuesday

Star Trek is playing in about half the markets internationally as Wolverine (54 to 102, IIRC), and also around 300 fewer screens in North America, I think.

Yeah, just domestically. Trek might never make more as much as Wolverine internationally since Trek hasn't opened in some places and might run into competition from movies down the line.

Re: Star Trek - $6.45 million on Tuesday

Per Boxofficemojo.com, Insurrection made about $42 million outside of North America. According to the OP's link, Trek XI has now matched that (granted, the INS figure is not adjusted for inflation or changing exchange rates).

BOM also says First Contact made $54 million internationally. XI should match that by Sunday, I suspect.

Re: Star Trek - $6.45 million on Tuesday

It should do, at least, Batman Begins numbers overall (and I think Paramount would be quite happy with that). That's what I thought it would do months ago when the question was asked in some thread or other. The true test of this new team in terms of financial wherewithal will come with the sequel. TDK numbers are unlikely, to say the least, but a 20-30% increase over this one's take would be great. If, however, it does not surpass, or even notably under-performs (relative to cost), then I think the franchise will go back to the back burner for awhile (like the Narnia films, for instance).

Just wait until Trek opens in Mexico--Aie, chihuahua!

:p

Seriously, no reason for concern about the drop... the movie's still performing better than most thought it would.

My feeling from talking around the neighborhood here is that Angels and Demons will skew old (like me, 50 plus).

There is also a potentially sizable number of people who are now curious enough to see Star Trek after the word of mouth.

Add to that the Wolverine crowd finally getting around to the movie, if only to blow raspberries at the screen, and weekend 2 might be pretty darned good.

Here's hoping!
