Are you reading THIS thread indranee??? This thread only proves my point that JJ knows what he is doing, and doesn't need your, or my, advice.

Re: Star Trek - $42M 2nd Weekend - Domestic $147M - Global Nears $200M

So it looks like it'll come in pretty close to the $44-45 million that I was initially expecting, expect with a bit less than I thought on Friday and more on Saturday. Excellent hold!

Fist pump, Similitude! Data style...

Going to S.F. in an hour or so to contribute to Sunday's official take at the IMAX...!

I'm doing the same, but going to Dublin.

Great news! Could not be better.

However, I think we are going to have some very frustrating news about international box office grosses. A&D is said to have done spectacularly around the world, which could be a huge hit to an already squishy Trek international reception.

Yeah, Da Vinci Code made $152 million internationally its first weekend (on top of its $77 million domestic). Even if A&D underperformed DVC, it probably still made well over $100 million.
Da Vinci Code was also one of the highest selling books ever.

It hasn't been released everywhere, though its doing very well in the UK unsurprisingly.
it hasn't been opened in mexico yet. i think variety said it would open Jun 5 due to the swine flu scare. mexico is often one of the top 10 markets.

It hasn't opened in Japan yet either, and Japan is one of the top 3 markets.

Europeans just like blockbuster movies about themselves, which is understandable. They don't get many from the US. They also seem to have made the connection between Da Vinci Code and A&D better than US public.

Re: Star Trek - $42M 2nd Weekend - Domestic $147M - Global Nears $200M

The Sunday drop should be a bit softer than normal because Monday's a holiday in Canada (and remember that "domestic box office" = box office from USA + Canada).

Re: 42 Million 2nd Weekend Take!

Gee, just think what it would be grossing if all the old Trek fans weren't boycotting it. ;)

The old Trek fans aren't boycotting the movie. They're seeing it two or three times so that they can correctly identify all the minutiae that irritate them.

Re: Star Trek - $42M 2nd Weekend - Domestic $147M - Global Nears $200M

Since BoxOfficeGuru is now reporting $43 million, I've edited the first post.

Only a 42.8% drop and Star Trek was the #1 movie on Sunday ($12.4 A&D vs. $13.2 ST).

Re: Star Trek - $42M 2nd Weekend - Domestic $147M - Global Nears $200M

A 42% drop off is amazing really. Better than I had anticipated given the healthy open. There's also the RT number to have fun with. Angels' RT number is in the tank with Wolverine now. Trek could come out at the other end as the best reviewed summer movie.

Re: Star Trek - $42M 2nd Weekend - Domestic $147M - Global Nears $200M

That's cool, though I'm curious how it *was* the number one movie today when today hasn't fully panned out yet!

Based on the estimates.

A&D
Friday: $16.6
Saturday: $19
Sunday: $12.4
TOTAL: $48 million

Trek
Friday: $11.9
Saturday: $18
Sunday: $13.2
TOTAL: $43 million

Re: Star Trek - $42M 2nd Weekend - Domestic $147M - Global Nears $200M

Any time a film loses less than 50% of its audience in its second week is a very good sign in the movie industry. That's a powerful second week for Star Trek and this movie will easily gross over $200 million and probably over $250 million. Way to go, Star Trek!

Re: Star Trek - $42M 2nd Weekend - Domestic $147M - Global Nears $200M

BTW, this $43 million number could be underestimated since Monday is a Canadian holiday. I'm not sure how much effect that will have, but it should have some effect.

Re: 42 Million 2nd Weekend Take!

WOW! Only like a 42-43% drop.

If the numbers hold that's incredible! :bolian:

Re: 42 Million 2nd Weekend Take!

Although A&D beat out Star Trek on Friday by a good margin, Variety says that Star Trek beat A&D on Saturday in ticket sales.
