At no point did I say I supported Paramout. All parties involved are greedy.
So what you're saying is that if somebody just happened to offer you a million dollars to do a job, you'd say no and reply with just give me $500k???At no point did I say I supported Paramout. All parties involved are greedy.
It's simple math. Pine has multiple lifetimes of money already (20 million) and is holding for more multiple lifetimes of money instead of less multiple lifetimes of money. Easy peasy to define that as greed. Hemsworth even more so with a net worth of 60 million.
Major false equivalency. Most people in that situation wouldn't already have multiple lifetimes of money and obscene excess. They would need that money.
The kelvinverse is dying because Paramount never knew the potential of what they had to begin with
And previous Star Trek movies weren't made to put butts in theatre seats? The use of "dying" assumes the Kelvinverse was alive in the first place. But in reality it was a Frankenstein's monster, an agglomerative mechanical simulacrum; the movies that constituted it were made only to put butts in theater seats and (despite the use of familiar character names) bore only the slightest relation to what Star Trek used to be about, with a few minutes of the aged Nimoy as Old Spock for a veneer of legitimacy in the first two of the movies.
Or, to put it another way: "Doctor Korby was never here."
There's a lot of greed in the world, and people being ridiculously overpaid adds to that picture, but there's also a matter of fairness involved - try looking at it this way :At no point did I say I supported Paramout. All parties involved are greedy.
And previous Star Trek movies weren't made to put butts in theatre seats?
Well, sure, but those earlier 10 movies were written and produced such that, over and above the hope of selling tickets to a general audience, a Star Trek fan might derive something from following the same actors over a period of 25+ years (in the case of the original cast) or 15 years (TNG), in terms of insight into their characters. (Yes, I know this eventually degraded into, for example, Action Hero Picard.) What I meant by the Frankenstein's-monster aspect of the Kelvinverse films is that after the failure of the last TNG movie and of Enterprise, Star Trek should have been allowed to rest in peace, certainly for much longer than 4-5 years. Abrams and Bad Robot reanimated something that should have died a natural death, cobbled together from gosh-wow effects shots and old plot elements. OK, I've said it. (Also, Abrams is a lousy director.)
So what you're saying is that if somebody just happened to offer you a million dollars to do a job, you'd say no and reply with just give me $500k???
My guess would be, probably not.
Like any other normal human being in today's world, you'd take the money and run.

Of course I'd want the million dollars because I am not independently wealthy yet. If I was ALREADY worth 20 million, my response would be, "Thanks, but I already have more money than I will ever need, so I'm not interested in your job offer, or any other job offer for the rest of my life. I will never exchange my labor for currency ever again. Hedonism from here on out."
That is not how the world works.
Pine mulling over the ST4 deal

(notice a trekkie in the comments - "when your holiday is finished please beam back to LA & get that Star Trek 4 contract signed for slightly less money. At least ensure you get to Kirk again before they recast you! Studios ALWAYS do that if they think you are not worth the extra just ask Alec Baldwin what happened with his Jack Ryan franchise role!" )
That’s nice. But no one is morally obligated to follow this approach, nor do they deserve insults for making a different choice.Of course I'd want the million dollars because I am not independently wealthy yet. What does that even mean?
Jesus Christ. I HATE that level of Paparazzi reporting. Holy shit are they stalking his holiday!
This is honestly some bullshit, and one of the reasons I never want to be a movie star - being chased like that on every little private holiday. Fuck those people stalking celebrities like that, and fuck whatever newspapers and blogs that publish such private moments even more.
No - Mr. Pine and his agent is demanding that Paramount adhere to the contract They and He/His Agent agreed to. There was a contract for JJ Star Trek 4 IN PLACE, with compensation set. It's Paramount who doesn't want to honor said existing/signed contract. I don't fault Pine or his agent for wanting Paramount to honor terms in a contract they entered into. It's simple math. Oh please. I think you know exactly what I mean.
To Pine at least, this is his job, his livelihood, and he's being short changed on an signed contract by a large company.
That fact that he is a movie star (and not an A-list one at that) is irrelevant to this discussion, his employers are reneging on a deal that was made, and worse still, this is down to their bad choices and decisions they've made with the franchise, and are now attempting to make him pay when he's done his job to the best of his ability, and a good job at that.
I'd like to wager there's not a single person on this board that wouldn't like to walk away from an employer that was treating them in this manner, in fact I'll bet some of you have, I know I have, and it wasn't long ago either.
You remarking he has 'lifetimes of money' - and I'm sure he has - to you, just smacks of jealousy on your part. Like I said earlier, there are literally millions of people on this planet who view people like us, in the western world as having riches beyond their dreams for just having basics like clean water and shelter in extreme cases. Does that mean we should all accept shoddy treatment from employers? Does it fuck.
These things are all relative, hence me disagreeing with you on why Pine should just 'roll over' and accept less, and for what? The love of the profession? Charity? Oh no, it'll just be so Paramount can cover their arse and line their pockets.
As much as I want ST4 to get made, I'm with Pine on this.
