Star Trek - $4.53 million Monday (5/18) - $152 million (Final numbers)

Re: Star Trek - $4.53 million Monday (5/18) - $152 million (Final numb

i would bet that a sequel is a lock at this point. Even if it stopped making money today, it is still pretty clear that the franchise has potential and life left in it. When you consider that it still has several weeks left and the DVD release, I wouldn't be shocked if they are already working on the sequel as we speak

Star Trek IMAX still going strong
2009-05-19 11:50:50.000

Mississauga's IMAX Corporation announced today that Star Trek: The IMAX Experience is going where no film has gone before when it comes to box office revenues.

The company said during its second week in theatres, Star Trek took in approximately $5.3 million from 138 locations around the world.

“This is our best second weekend ever, with IMAX theatres in many
markets still operating at near capacity during peak hours,"
said Greg Foster, chairman and president of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "The vast majority of IMAX locations are running late-night shows this week to accommodate the demand."

The neat thing is that Star Trek now has surpassed Wolverine in box office earnings - even though Wolverine had a 6 day head start.

The only question about a Star Trek sequel is WHEN. Not if...

All actors have 3 film contracts, so I think we'll see at least 2 more voyages with this crew.

I bet those IMAX people are going to regret the loss of trek next week

Yup, I think they should dedicate one or two screens to Star Trek this Memorial Day weekend... I'll bet the theaters would still be packed.

At least they are smart enough to keep 'em open later at night tonight and tomorrow for people to see the movie.

As for the contracts for 2 more films, hopefully the salaries are locked in with whatever percentage increase, so that they can afford a truly big name villain. Or would it be wise for the crew to be overshadowed... Hmmm...

I don't know how booked those IMAX theatres are the rest of the year, but maybe they can re-release it in IMAX later on.

Wonderful. Star Trek has done even better then I'm sure most at Paramount ever thought possible.

Saw it twice, second time in the IMAX, and the place was very sold out...some people were standing as they watched the flick. When I left the theatre, there was a massive line outside as well...people were bringing their kids to boot. If you can, go see Trek at an IMAX; the CG visuals on a screen that large are fantastic.

I just got back from seeing it my 7th time in IMAX. You have to actually move your head around to see it all.

The IMAX in my area only shows second run... The 300 and Watchmen are playing right now. So there is hope. Although I did see it in The City. Awesome.

i heard they may have some free time later on depending on how night of the museum does since the next film they have officially booked is harry potter.
i dont know for sure how long the mandatory contract for night of the museum is.

Re: Star Trek - $4.53 million Monday (5/18) - $152 million (Final numb

Why would anyone want to see Museum in IMAX? I can't figure that one out.

T4 you can argue is potentially better in IMAX.

Star Trek definitely is.

I don't think they need a better actor for a new villain. They just need a better backstory for one.

Star Trek definitely is.

they might have wanted a family film.

Yeah, but a family film of that kind is just as enjoyable on a regular large theater screen; there's nothing there that is more enjoyable in IMAX (IMO).

Ben Stiller's mug magnified by 3? Why? :D

Yeah, the IMAX trailer for NATM2 was really unimpressive especially following the one for Transformers 2.

I think they saw this as having the potential of being the biggest family film besides HP, so they wanted to put it on IMAX to milk families of even more money.

Yet more excellent news for Star Trek! :D

I must admit, however, that I'm very disappointed with the international numbers so far...

I'm going with my original - by years - analysis of "Star Trek;" it's American Mythology. There's a lot of "Made in the USA" in this film - gung-ho, go for broke, act first, think later militaria of the stripe that has made us so popular in Europe over the last several years.

In that, it is awfully faithful to TOS - everything old is new again.

TNG was very 80s corporate, take a meeting smug superpower; DS9 was the toothless giant being hectored by lesser powers... there's a lot of "us" stuck between the lines in Star Trek, usually.

I'd say, considering the theoretical American boxoffice for a "Doctor Who" movie, Trek is doing fine overseas.

From: http://blog.newsok.com/nerdage/2009/05/19/how-will-star-trek-fare-against-terminator-salvation/

The latest ticketing data from MovieTickets.com on “Terminator Salvation,” which releases Thursday night, indicates “Terminator Salvation” is slightly out in front of “Star Trek.”
As of 12 p.m. ET today on MovieTickets.com, “Terminator Salvation” accounts for 28 percent of all ticket sales with “Star Trek” close behind at 25 percent, followed by “Angels & Demons” at 21 percent.

Are you kidding me!?!:wtf: :vulcan:

Also an interesting prediction of Memorial Day Weekend: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/weekendwarriornews.php?id=55642

As far as the returning movies, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek should hold up well, even though it will likely be losing a lot of its IMAX screens to "Night at the Museum." Expect the demand to be great enough that it gets some of them back by mid-June. Otherwise, Memorial Day is a great weekend to catch up on April and early summer movies people may have missed and that's often what many of them do rather than trying to get into crowded theatres for the new blockbusters.

Predictions and Comparisons - (all four-day predictions)

1. Terminator Salvation (Warner Bros.) - $71.6 million N/A

2. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (20th Century Fox) - $67.4 million N/A

3. Star Trek (Paramount) - $32.0 -26%

4. Angels & Demons (Sony) - $28.0 -39%
