Star-less Trek

Chris_Johnston

Captain
Captain
I'd been looking at the high-res shots of ISS construction during the latest Shuttle mission, and I was reminded of the fact that stars are not visible on the daylight side of any planetoid, due to the exposure required to keep the lit parts from looking like white, featureless blobs.
(Funny thing, it's this lack of visible stars in the Apollo pictures that those "Moon Hoax" idiots cite as key "evidence" that we never landed on the Moon. )

I'd been looking at the stills from the TOS-R episodes and something didn't seem quite right... and then I realized CBS-D has been making the stars brighter and more numerous than they ever were in the original version.

In interstellar space this wouldn't be unrealistic (but then the Enterprise would need to be lit by the onboard floods).

So, I did a little Photoshop experiment...

What say y'all?

Well, if I recall correctly the human eye is more capable of adapting to different brightness at the same time than photographic film, so supposing that we are observing the image with the naked eye (and not through some kind of camera), it makes sense that we are seeing the planet and the stars properly exposed. I remember an interview with an astronaut about all the "moon hoax" garbage where he said that while in space they can see the stars by the naked eye but they do not show up in film because of this problem of exposure, but I cannot find a link.

However, in movies often the dramatic effect wins over realism, so I can accept the starry sky because a void would be for me much more distracting.

In interstellar space this wouldn't be unrealistic (but then the Enterprise would need to be lit by the onboard floods).
Same here. Technically you are right, but I prefer my starship lit up. :)

Well said, Iggy. You've put my mind at ease.

Now my only worry is... Why did my image show up for Belar and not for me?
EDIT: I've just been informed by Lord Garth that I need 100 posts before I can post images.
DANG! I rely pretty heavily on visual aids to get my points across... and I only have 38 posts! :brickwall:

Don't worry, I had the same problem. But in most cases there'll be someone who'll be so nice as to post your pics. :)

Eh, I prefer the stars most of the time, camera contrast limitations be damned. The one time I think it's appropriate to blot out pinpoint stars is when the camera is pointing towards a solar system's primary. No normal camera (or set of human eyes, for that matter) would be able to discern the relatively faint pinpricks of light from distant stars when staring at a much larger, closer and brighter ball of flaming gas.

:) That's why Belar quoted it for you. We all needed help when we first got here.

The reason you have to wait is because this board attracts a lot of drive-by idiots who stop in just to spam or post porn pics. This gives the administration a chance to nip it in the bud without people getting smacked in the face with unexpected crotch shots when they visit a thread. If you're willing to stick around long enough to build up a history, you're probably not going to be a problem.

Oops, I forgot to say Thank you, Belar, for doing that!

Thanks for reminding me, JiNX, and for the clarification on newbie policy.
Makes perfect sense.

I thought there might have been something about eye vs. camera to it all.

Personally I prefer stars, the more the better. One thing I really liked about the space scenes in Star Wars is the packed star scape behind the ships.

Yeah, I too wish the Okuda team remastering TOS would put more stars in the backdrops of space. It never hurts to look the cosmos look "busier." Just look at the opening credits of VOYAGER...all the stars, stellar gases, nebulae and random rocks and planets peppering the screen as the cast credits roll by and the ship zooms everywhere.

Okay, so I modified my original starless picture with a smattering of single-pixels, and took down the brightness on the colors.
I like it a bit better.

Just quoting.

You're welcome, Chris_Johnston! But you are not more newbie than I am. Some posts ago I had exactly the same problems. But there was always someone who posted my pics. The people here are nice. :stops sucking up to everyone: :D
