Stan and Ollie (2018)

Just saw this first trailer for a movie I had no idea was coming out.

It looks like it'll be really amazing. A behind-the-scenes look at the lives of Laurel & Hardy, their friendship, their fights, their actual lives outside of the act.

As a massive Three Stooges fan, I never saw (and never will see) that stupid movie from a few years ago, but this, this I'll see.

Who else will be there on October 21?

I hope that movie is a conscious parody and not a verbatim bio-pic. Creative liberties are one thing but the first 25 seconds of the teaser starts out making the two look like complete dumbasses. After other comedy-documentaries (aka "mockumentaries") like the very same BBC's "Doctor Who: An Adventure in Time and Space", the writers increasingly seem to like to go gung-ho and borderline-insult the people involved rather than being factual. If STAN AND OLLIE is factual in the guy mistaking Tower Bridge as Eiffel Tower, I apologize in advance as well as buy the video release. If the movie is trying to have one try to wind up the other, then the teaser should have shown the rest of the bit - not a good place to cut it at if they're trying to draw interest, or is that part of the current fad in entertainment?

Yeah, it doesn't strike me as too far-fetched that the guy also had a sense of humor in everyday life. The trailer certainly looks interesting.

Having watched the trailer, John C. Reilly is two things; One, probably in the best role of his life. The makeup is incredible, and his characterization, in just the trailer, is better than I've seen from him since his officious space cop in GOTG. And Two, arguably the best choice for the role, now that Chuck McCann has passed. I look forward to this.

Oh, and Ar Pharazon, have you seen the BTS TV movie, with these guys:

Paul Ben-Victor ... Moe Howard
Evan Handler ... Larry Fine
John Kassir ... Shemp Howard
Michael Chiklis ... Jerome 'Curly' Howard

I found it enjoyable.

Oh yeah, that Three Stooges biopic was good. It's the Farrelly brothers movie I was referring to.

I've always loved Laurel & Hardy, but I doubt this will get a wide release, so I'll probably end up seeing it on Netflix at some point.

Edit: And wow, they've really done a great job with the casting! Steve Coogan really makes a good Stan Laurel. Has that bewildered look that the real Stan Laurel often had.

My dad loved Laurel and Hardy, and I grew up watching them, and this looks amazing. Both Reilly and Coogan look fantastic, Coogan has Stan's facial expressions down to a tee.

I took the Tower Bridge/Eiffel Tower line as a clear joke.

As far as I can tell the film's set during a tour of England the two made late in their careers. Especially given the timing of the release I wouldn't be surprised if there's Oscar buzz around this.

I figured it was. There were some good jokes in that film (I saw it on cable, and didn't see it all), but over all, it was a poor representation of the Stooges. Too Farrelly, not enough classic humor, and what there was was often poorly presented.

This looks really interesting---if the reviews are even half-way decent, I'll go see it. Did not even recognize John C. Reily.

"There it is: The Eiffel Tower."
" chuckle "

Clearly a joke.

I'll likely be among the first in line for this. I hope it plays in limited release at small arthouse theaters. I prefer seeing films at those venues anyway.

I hope it gets put out on dvd if it's not released widely. They both play their roles really well.

I'd think a DVD release is a given, considering the straight-to-DVD releases of movies they knew weren't even worth putting in theaters.

I wonder, does a movie need to have a theatrical release to be considered for an Oscar?

^ I think so, though the criteria is really easy to hit, you get a film into a small number of cinemas for a few days and it probably qualifies.

Yea good point there. I've seen my share of those out there and they make me . So many bad movies to dig through just to find anything good.

Looks good. Coogan looks and sounds uncannily like Stan & Reilly is pretty convincing too.

In similar vein, I can recommend the novel “He” by john Connolly, which is about an ageing Stan (after Babe’s death) reflecting on his life and career.

Just noticed Ollie's wife is played by Moaning Myrtle. Who's my age (52). She was made up well in the Potter films.
