Stagnation o t'lungs?

My grandpa and I were lent the entire BBC production "James Heriot's All Creatures Great and Small."

The portrayed rural residents of the Yorkshire Dales at times describe their recently died animals as dying of or getting a "stagnation o t'lungs."

Can I get a translation?

Well the o t'lungs part is simply "of the lungs" - not sure why they'd say stagnation, but I guess it means the lungs stopped working.

I believe they mean fluid in the lungs. If I recall correctly, in All Creatures, there was a local knacker (guy who runs the slaughterhouse) who believed he knew how to diagnose a sick animal just by looking at it. His usual diagnosis was "stagnation o' lung," which, of course, was complete BS and irritated young James Herriot to no end.

Aye. Mallock was the man, had "fellmonger" written on side of his lorry.

Mr Biggens was another annoyance of Heriot.
