Stage 9 gets cease and desist order from CBS

Sure they did, they created the app. I bet you couldn't do that. They didn't create from scratch a lot of the visuals and shapes but the physics, collision detection, who knows what else was created by them. I would have expected a trek culture not be so discriminating about the idea of a free world.
wasn't directed at me, but I'll answer. I could, given enough time, and a team, do what they did, and I know others who would. They wouldn't though.

I'll go further and say, I and some friends actually do create a star trek universe roleplay that does use a viritual world and 3d starships/bases to conduct what is essentially live interactive storytelling. We've taken extreme care to not use ANY STO/Paramount/or CBS property. We don't use any characters and story lines, even the era is one that wasn't handled by Star Trek, mostly out of respect, partially because that is funner, and to some degree because we know if we did we might be doing something unethical. We've been doing this for years, and so have others. We don't charge money, don't ask for donations, don't go out of our way to seek anyone else who wants to be involved.

And after all that, and all the "Free" work we put into it, if CBS or Paramount said stop, we would. No hard feelings. We'd probably just change the name of a few things and go it standalone by this point as we have no intellectual property from Trek, but nevertheless there'd be no hard feelings. Because I can admit if they found a problem with it, still, then I would need to be humble enough to realize they might have a reason that I missed.

Damn this thread went in a weird direction.
I heard about this the other day, and I do feel a little bad for the Stage 9 people, but CBS had every right to do what they did.
I'm sorry but at this point, it's really kind of stupid to go and put this much time and effort into an fan project like this, when you start going this big it's pretty much inevitable that CBS is going to come down on you.
I don't associate products with their inventors or labor involved, most people don't. Like when I purchase cheap shoes from Wal-Mart that I find out later were made in sweatshop conditions, I don't think about it. Or animal rights when I eat a burger. I have seen documentary films about animal cruelty but I still eat meat anyway.
Just out of curiosity, why don't you?
I am very much aware of these things, and while I do continue to use them I always try to at least consider a bit what it took the get these things to me.
I still buy clothes that is most likely made in sweatshops, but that's because I don't have a ton money, and pretty much all of the clothes that is made here in the US is just to expensive for me.
I also still eat meat, but I do care about how badly the animals are treated, I just can't give up my meat. I have thought about trying to go vegetarian, but I'm just to much of a carnivore, and it just feels to limiting to me. I do feel a bit bad, and try to keep in mind what the animals went through for their meat to get to me.

Less wrong than the destitute conditions you were describing in other examples.
But if enough people do what you're talking about them they will end up in those conditions. The only reason they have the money they do is because the majority of people don't steal the stuff they're making.

Possibly, I'm still evaluating whether might makes right. Back in the day if the alternative to buying a book was to pull out a pencil and start copying, I'd rather buy the book. Or to get a song for free, wait for it to come up on the radio, I'd rather buy the album. Technology making jobs obsolete is a fact of life
. There's a big difference between technology making a job obsolete, and using technology to steal from people.
Hell, not that long ago there was talking about trying to give my job to robots.

"If Star Trek were free, there would be 10 or 11 Star Trek shows out there right now instead of just one"

Nope. If Star Trek were free, there would be no financial incentive to make one show, much less 10.

There's already been at least 11 made https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_fan_productions

I don't know. I was trying to research why I should care but I don't :-D bystander apathy maybe

CBS/Paramount do not like that someone is able to do their job better than themselves. CBS/Paramount is caving their own grave a long time.

A lot of assumption in that post. More like CBS is protecting their property and any long term contracts they might have with video game companies.

Which is perfectly reasonable.

My God - this is a tragedy! We should petition to bring this project back. They had no reason to squelch our free expression!
