Oh, how I'd have loved to see Morrow's face... though Stiles' WTF? was brilliant too.

I've watched all the series, and loved them all, but the movies are where it's at for me these days. The series are too long to rewatch for me now, I just don't have the time any more. I can get my fix from a couple of hours with one of the films here and there. Usually when I've had a few drinks and a puff.
I will agree that watching Trek movies under the influence works best, because other than TMP the plots aren't all that exciting, it's all in the visuals, the dialogues, the music. I used to ignore the movies altogether, but I'm growing to appreciate them as works of art rather than works of science fiction.

I can't agree with this at all. Nimoy had absolutely no idea how to handle Shatner and basically just let him do his thing. He's at the height of self-parody in TSFS and TVH. The ridiculously telegraphed stumble by the chair after he finds out David's dead is just the icing on the cake.

It wasn't a commentary. It was a reaction. I had a similar one. You will find very few people who agree that Shatner was terrible or even poor in TSFS. By 1984 Shatner was Shatner, but he's not terrible in TSFS. Unfortunately he was never "first season" Kirk after the first season, but he's pretty good in most episodes and movies.
Right. But I don't believe for a minute that Morrow fully bought Kirk's agreement to drop the matter.
Just the ineptitude of the Starfleet people that Kirk got away.
Actually, I've always believed that Morrow kind of "let Kirk go." Yes, he did the political / duty-bound thing and said "no." He even ordered the Excelsior to pursue. But he didn't pull out all the stops because he respects Kirk and was hoping deep down that Kirk could complete his mission. Also, since Kirk was rogue, Starfleet would have plausible deniability.
Just a little headcannon wankery that makes me happy.

Can't agree with this. Whilst I'd say his performance in TWOK is at least as good if not better than TSFS, I would say he's at the 'height of self parody' more in TFF and GEN far more.
I've always really liked SFS. Aside from the third act on Vulcan dragging a little bit it's pretty much perfect if you ask me. Maybe my second favorite Trek movie after WoK.
