ST09 Prime Universe Question

iMike

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Let me apologize in advance if this question has been asked. I looked for it and could not find it. In ST09, Nero follows Prime Spock from the established universe into what we know now as an alternate universe. Pocket Books has been very good about continuing the 24th Century established universe post-Nemesis for several years now, and I do realize when it comes to the films and anything done on television, the novels are not considered cannon.

My question though is about Prime Spock's appearance, and Nero's in the alternate universe (JJverse). I rewatched the film and unless I missed it, I did not see Prime Spock explain WHEN in the Prime universe he came from. Clearly he not only entered an alternate universe but came back in time (at least as far as established time was before). I'm curious if Prime Spock came through from what he knew as the latter 2th Century, or if perhaps (because Vulcans can live incredibly long lives) was his time already well beyond what we know of as the 24th Century in the Prime Universe?

When Prime Spock meets nuKirk for the first time, he tells him that the star that went nova and destroyed Romulus happened "one hundred and twenty-nine years from now," which works out to 2387.

Oh okay, so roughly almost a decade after events of 'Nemesis.' thanks

Additionally, in the scene where (nu)Spock and Kirk first enter the Jellyfish ship, there's this:
SPOCK: I foresee a complication. The design of this ship is far more advanced than I've anticipated.
COMPUTER VOICE: Voice print and face recognition analysis enabled. Welcome back, Ambassador Spock.
KIRK: Wow, that's weird.
SPOCK: Computer, what is your manufacturing origin?
COMPUTER VOICE: Stardate twenty-three eighty-seven. Commissioned by the Vulcan Science Academy.
SPOCK: (to Kirk) It appears that you have been keeping important information from me.
KIRK: You'll be able to fly this thing, right?
SPOCK: Something tells me I already have.

Some interesting legal issues regarding the new movies and the novelverse are discussed in this thread

iMike - if you're looking for more on the prologue to ST09, they released a four-part series of comics (Star Trek Countdown) prior to the movie's release. They took place mostly in the Prime universe, including some Next Gen characters, and tell the story of how and when Nero and Spock Prime came to be where they are in ST09. I found it very helpful to have read those before seeing the movie. They're available as a paperback compilation.

However, if one is used to the novels, some of the details in Countdown may not match... ;)

And there are some major oddities there even from the movie-watcher's viewpoint... Basically, everything the comics added to the character of Nero seems to be in blatant contradiction with what the movie establishes!

But 2387 for the loss of Romulus seems confirmed. (Unless Spock's creation of a timehole with the red matter allowed him to go back in time two days and fix Romulus before Nero chased him to even more distant past!)

ping!
Next stop, Station Romulan Doom (minus two days).
Transfer here to the Avert Romulan Doom Line.
Mind the gap, and thank you for riding Black Hole Transit!
