ST Uncharted

Whether or not this turned out to be the most exciting and mouth watering series pitch CBS execs had ever heard- I cannot imagine them even considering using a script that had been published and shared online already.

Everyone would know or have a basic idea of where the show was going. Therefore removing the mystery and need to prevent spoilers.

But the leak was Gummelt himself. Wouldn't Paramount have told him to keep his mouth shut about this project until such time that it starts to actually get produced?
If this really is just about getting the domain, why would they care if he leaked it?

In fact, it's pretty clever on his part if that's the case. He gets all this hype and coverage. He may not get a Star Trek show out of it but maybe he can use it in other ways and open other doors for himself.

You're missing the point: I know it's just about getting the domain. But if this was in fact Paramount wanting this guy's idea for a new Star Trek show (as has been reported), then it makes no sense for them to allow him to reveal that fact ahead of time. That's like Paramount telling JJ Abrams that he could leak his entire script to Star Trek '09 online for everyone to read years before they produced the movie.

The only reason I can see as to why Gummelt revealed this info is that Paramount actually has no interest whatsoever in producing a show based on his idea, and that they're just humoring him for whatever weird reason.

No I'm not missing your point. If anything, I'm agreeing with you. I was simply suggesting that if they're not really interested, and this is just a case of jumping through hoops to get his domain, then they likely couldn't care less if he leaks it. :)

Then I probably misunderstood you. My apologies :techman:

When asked whether the opportunity to pitch Star Trek Uncharted came in return for the StarTrekBeyond.com domain name, Michael Gummelt declined to comment.

Well it was kinda obvious lol, filming just started so they needed that name ASAP so they can officially announce the film name and that filming has started.

They didn't need the name for filming. You don't have to have a name for a film set up in time for filming —*you want it for when you're getting ready to promote and release. But otherwise, you don't need to have a name this early.

And there's still a chance the name could still change.

Well played Mister Gummelt. Well played. :)

I think the "no comment" speaks volumes.

While he won't comment on it, I look at this personally and feel that he wanted to get a version of the story out there that looked good for him. I mean, why not? That's what public relations does all the time, right?

The problem is that there comes a point where you can't control the story in the overall news media environment. That usually comes at the very beginning.

I feel sad about the whole situation. It was an effort to put out a positive story, but it immediately came with doubts about whether accurate information was being shared. Those doubts only grow with the "no comment."

I think the doubts were also - and rightly so - also came from the fact that his story was rather absurd. That might have a smidge to do with it. ;)

No shit, don't you think I don't know already that. I probably worded that wrong but my meaning basically was, now that they started filming, there is lot of media attention pointing their way, so it 'helps' if they can get the official name cemented down. They want all these news outlets to start to showing 'Star Trek: Beyond' so it sticks in peoples head etc.. It all about promotion.

Of course, Trekmovie still hasn't bothered to contact Paramount or CBS about it either.

Has anyone? Seriously, in another thread that was my first thought was to go to CBS and Paramount and just send a quick email. Of course, there is not an easy way to go about it.

It's dumb that inquiries have to be so difficult with corporations.

Even if Trekmovie doesn't get someone at either CBS or Paramount, the attempt should've been made. It's the least they could do. A "we attempted to reach CBS or Paramount for comment, but they didn't return our emails or calls" goes a long way to showing they have some journalistic integrity.

But yeah, it's hard to get anyone from a big company to call you back! :)

Journalistic integrity among fandom news is more rare than Trellium-D, biomimetic gel, ketracel-white and Vulcan tears these days.
