Spoilers ST Strange New Worlds - StarShips & Technology Season 1 Discussion

It's purely for dramatic effect. Equipment has to spark, short out and explode for the threat in a given scene to be conveyed. I'd love to think and hope that by at least the 22nd century the computer consoles aboard human spacecraft won't explode into a shower of hot sparks if a meteoroid so much as grazes the side of the ship but, hey, for 20th and 21st century entertainment it sure gets the point across even if it's silly. ;)
Exactly. To quote Picard,, "Sometimes you have to bow to the absurd."

The rocks are for the catapults, in case the futuristic weapons lose power. :D

In Contagion when a frustrated Riker asked if it would be possible to find rocks to throw at the Romulan ship, the young officer he was venting to took him seriously and started replicating a supply of throwing rocks and storing them in an conveniently empty space above the bridge, a practice that caught on on other ships...

Regarding seat belts, I almost wonder if Starfleet did a study and discovered that personnel were just as much to suffer injuries with or without them. They may offer some protection in circumstances where the artificial gravity or inertia dampers were compromised, but otherwise personnel could suffer injuries from straining against the restraints themselves. The ideal restraint could be a total harness system in which personnel are completely locked into place in their seats with limited freedom of movement.

But I guess obligatory exploding consoles would still get them that way...
Does anyone on here know what real naval combat ships do?
