ST Phase 2: MIND-SIFTER

I always thought Russo's portrayal of Wesley was unnuanced. What does his character think of these experiments? Is he ready to have his job replaced? There's no subtext in the performance. He's just flat.

Gotta agree with that. Kirk was willing to bet the Enterprise and everyone's life on Wesley giving him the benefit of the doubt. There's really nothing in the portrayal of Wesley to indicate that would happen. Fine episode, but Russo's performance wasn't a highlight.

Pretty cool stuff. I feel like the corridors on TNG and Voyager definitely benefited from that design scheme too, even if the one seen here wasn't implemented directly on any of those sets.

Thanks for the pic, Maurice - but frankly, I am underwhelmed. All they could come up with for a change is a different beam? Or maybe this was work-in-progress, as the step towards TMP seems to me to be too big.

Who knows? There are no renderings of the corridors that I've seen that match this, but Mike Minor sketches of some other sets show that these kinds be beams were planned to go through a number of the sets. No one seems to know what the wall treatment would have been.

I don't know what you mean by "the step towards TMP seems...to be too big."

I think you mean it's too SMALL a step from TV towards what ended up in TMP. I don't get why it should it be a "step" at all. It's what was designed for a TV show that never happened, and it all got rethought when it became a movie, so it's not some kind of evolution.

A step too big from your pic to what they ended up with. It could very well be that they started from scratch once it was clear that its going to be a movie - but they didn´t do that with the Enterprise itself (don´t know about other sets like the bridge).

All the sets in TMP are utterly different than their TV counterparts. I don't see how the corridors are any different in terms of how far they deviate from the original show.

There was supposed to be a hemispherical targeting gizmo on the bridge, but that particular dome looks too small to have been it.

Maybe it was a component of the new Transporter Room console? The one in TOS had that big screen in the middle of it; perhaps this was part of an updated version?

EDIT: Thumbing through my copy of the Phase II book, it could also be for the astrogator, as depicted in this concept painting:

This Starlog issue, no. 136, has Mike Minor's concept art for the Phase II corridors: https://archive.org/stream/starlog_magazine-136/136#page/n44/mode/1up

That's one Mike Minor concept for the corridors. I bet there were more. You see the same beams in the rooms in his other renderings in that article.

Likewise, that bridge concept does not "clearly" show where the Plexi dome goes, but we can surmise that it might've been intended to go there.
