Spoilers ST Discovery - Starships and Technology Season Three SPOILER Discussion

Thoughts?
RIP Leonard Nimoy.

All the factors out to get Prime Spock really sucks:
- Natural Old Age
- Freak accidents
- Assaults by somebody who hated him for some reason
- Some sort of pre-existing Physiological Condition
- The Universe itself will slowly kill you over some period of time for crossing the parallel Universe & Time Boundaries.

Man, what a sucky end because there are SOO many factors that could've taken out Prime Spock.

The thing that stuck most in my craw was this whole notion of being from a different time AND a separate dimension would eventually kill you. Poor early-late TNG alternate Yor is this universe’s first case, which suggests they still believe Spock died saving the galaxy and wasn’t transported to the divergent JJ-verse as a result - given that they’re implying that same event brought Yor to this universe AND projected him forward. Either way, they’re sorta implying that prime Spock’s ultimate fate was a result of his displacement as well. Thoughts?

I got the impression they thought he 'abandoned' Vulcan...

...It's all part of his big plan wherein he blows up Romulus and alienates Vulcan and the shared hatred ultimately unifies the two peoples.

Spock and Yor are not the only cases: maybe the Tasha Yar who hopped dimensions and time was also sick before she got killed. But length of time travel and "distance" from home dimension seem to factor in, too? A mere 20 years and a couple of different choices worth of "distance" may not have caused Yar to present any of Phillipa's symptoms.

It kind of reminds me of that one ep of Sliders where the team landed back on Earth Prime, only for Maggie to suddenly and inexplicably be unable to breathe for some reason. That problem never occurred on any other Earth or to any other character, and was a cheap plot reason to keep the Sliders moving.

He did get hyper-aged and then rejuvenated twice ("Deadly Years", "Lorelei Signal")! Might be both times shortened his lifespan by quarter of a century...

...Perhaps McCoy would have reached the 180s if not for that double whammy, too?

Timo Saloniemi

Shaving off fifty years he might have lived? Shall we throw in the side effects of being revived by the Genesis wave as well?
It's entirely possible Spock's new body wasn't at the exact age he was when his first body died when it was removed from the Genesis planet. He could've been several years older biologically after his resurrection than he was before it, especially considering he didn't age that much visibly between TSFS and TNG, compared to the gaps between TOS and TMP or TNG and ST09.

The only two individuals who dimension-hopped and time-traveled, and who got sick, were Yor and Georgiou. What do they have in common that Prime Spock and YE Yar don't? They traveled to the far future, not the past.

...It's intuitively attractive that the various timelines would have this tendency to "drift farther apart" from each other towards the future, so quite possibly Spock arriving at a timeline that only split 25 years earlier doesn't even count as a proper crossing.

It's also intuitive to think in terms of "timeline distance" in general. Kirk and pals crossed universes in "Mirror, Mirror" - but also in ST4:TVH where they went from a timeline where Scotty had not made Madeline upset and thus changed the future of the entire Republic of Dasvidania, to one where he had. The two timelines don't appear all that different when viewed from San Francisco, so there's little "distance" there.

Whether it matters to our TOS heroes themselves that they hopped from one timeline to another by going through the split point, rather than by direct means, remains unclear. If using the points route does protect a time traveler, we lose the datapoints of heroes who have done that sort of a thing (that is, most of them) and are not suffering any known ill effects. But if the time interval traveled is the truly significant thing, then Georgiou has all of 'em beat (save for Spock and McCoy at Sarpeidon, and the two guys eventually made it back - and of course all the VOY folks who visited Big Bang and likewise returned to tell the story); the failure of others to show similar symptoms tells us nothing much, then.

...And if so, perhaps we can deduce that the letters denote descending size and capabilities, with the compact F and the warp-less S taking their proper places on the spectrum as well?

As for the Risa scene...that bit about "no other ship for a hundred lightyears"?
The dialogue left off something necessary:
"No other ship for a hundred lightyears that we haven't accounted for."

If they're sticking with Epsilon Ceti B-II for Risa...that's 93 lightyears from Sol, give or take.
Or if we go by this website, based largely on Gaia EDR3 data? 76.8 lightyears.
"Mirror", "Prime" or "Kelvin", I'd expect the Risan system to be as busy as Sol or Nevasa/40 Eri.

That was a ridiculous statement, about the lack of starships within a hundred light years of the Discovery. Would an empire built upon fear and paranoia leave that much space empty of starships? I am dubious.

Yeah. They needed to add the "...that we haven't accounted for" to that line to make it work. Especially when in the neighbourhood of a place like Risa.

They did specify that Risa is the very definition of "in the middle of nowhere" in that universe. Because there's nothing there? Because there used to be this place of perhaps-not-sufficiently-ill repute, and the Terrans did something about it, and absolutely nothing was left so nobody would go there even if the ghosts of the past didn't scare them? Or because in this universe, "Risa" is synonymous with "abject terror", for reasons independent of the Terran Empire, and continues to be so even though none of the players mention this?

The Terrans razing places and being thorough about it rings true. Razing a hundred lightyears in a direction may seem excessive - but that's one of 'em Terran buzzwords anyway!

The Class A shuttle is intriguing enough, and would be fine in the decaf universe as well. No nacelles? Several cowlings with white light at the bows - several sets of coils? We could easily argue that Class A is older than Class C, even though arguing purely on aesthetics gets us in trouble with Class F, then.
