36% of fans answered that question with STNG...which certainly goes against the odd view on this BBS that some have, suggesting it is already out of date. 20% picked TOS and DS9.

I think it's hard to tell. I think TNG has entered a 'sweet spot', similar to the one that TOS had about 20 years ago, where it hit nostalgic buttons but also has a lot of iconic moments and characters that stand the test of time well. DS9 has aged well thematically, as it dealt with a lot of things (war, occupation and terrorism, specifically) that modern shows can't really discuss, BECAUSE they are so relevant right now- it seems too on the nose. DS9 was a bit prescient so it seems forward thinking, but who knows how that will seem in 20 years? I definitely think TNG has a lot of pop-culture cache right now because we all grew up with it, similar to how TOS had cache in the 80s for those who grew up with it in the 60s. Not sure if DS9 will capture the same zeitgeist, but hopefully it's associated with TNG will keep it (and VOY) going for a long time.

ENT, of course, can go and die in a hole for all I care.

Well TNG is also approaching it's 25th Anniversary. Where did those years go to that's a generation ago almost.

Could part of it be down, to the fact that the perception id a lot of TV these days, seem to be made up of reality and make over shows?

Meh. Not counting the first two seasons, yes. S1 and 2 look like they belong in the 70s.

I think they look better, even based on analog video tape!! Cinematography is better, more cinematic...the simple thought of seeing the lighting and photography from that 1st season in HD, in the glory it should have been seen makes me excited.

I love the look and feel of seasons 1 & 2 and to a lesser extent Season 3.

The show feels raw as hell at times. As does the writing. When you've watched every show 50-100 times it seems more interesting to watch the shows when they were trying to find themselves. Over time I much prefer those seasons to the more "technically" polished later season.

I am mildy concerned about seeing it in HD though. You can see those black squares all over the bridge on the DVD. Beacause they knew they were editing the thing in video I don't think they were overtly worried about the sets looking a bit rough round the edges. There's a shot in Encounter at Farpoint with a piece of carpet or something jammed under the ops station to keep it level!

You know, in it's own way, it very much gives the impression that it was made when it was made.

Like TOS was how people in the 60s thought the future would look like, TNG was pretty much what people in the 80s thought the future would be like.

Also, you have to throw in the same cheesy matte paintings and obvious fake environments that they used often to suggest that it won't look quite as "timeless" as say stuff using CGI and better surrounding effects.
