*Spoilers* U.S.S. Franklin Design?

All starships other than Borg cubes and spheres leave massive unexplained holes inside the "envelope" defined by the extremities. A donut might be the best way to create a ring of sensors or shield emitters without adding unnecessary mass. But when you create a tiny ship, you probably would wish for everything you do build to be of standing height! Unless you think crew health is paramount, and a racetrack thus the best way for them to commute from their cabins to their action stations.

The awkward thing about donut ships like the Vengeance is this: Imagine the turbolift trip from the bridge to the ten-forward area. You have to go all the way aft into the engine hull, then curve around the rim of the donut. There's no reason for it.

...For the ride from the bridge to Ten Forward? I'd argue likewise, on an all-business warship like this.

...Or then they are not (which is why Carol Marcus had to run), and Spock just happens to be such a perfect Vulcan that he stood absolutely still for the entire duration of that five-minute ride from shuttlebay to bridge in STXI - hence no wobbling effect in the fast-forward. :vulcan:

The Franklin looks small enough that lifts might be omitted altogether. Then again, the Defiant had lifts for some ill-specified reason.

Accessibility? She's still got four (or five?) decks, and people need to go up and down. It wouldn't be a good idea to rely on ladders alone when you're moving equipment around, or you've got crew members who have mobility issues. Just think of Melora!

With a ship that small, it'd be more efficient to use ladders and/or stairs. Impaired crewmembers can still receive assistance, and there's antigrav devices to move cargo.

I mean, with a ship that only has a few decks, why bother with a turbolift? That's like taking a Learjet down to the corner drugstore. Just overkill.

And you could probably move larger items via ship's ladders than via turbolifts. For some reason, Starfleet has never bothered to design a lift big enough to take a stretcher patient horizontally!

Although I do like to think that there are technological solutions to moving bulky items inside the starships. Perhaps there are dedicated cargo turbolifts and turbo-ambulances? Perhaps the shafts can carry cargo without the need for a lift cab around it? Even doorways need not be a problem: while the TOS transporter room has a very narrow door, its back wall is set at odd, changing angles in the different episodes, perhaps implying it is in fact movable in-universe, too, rather than merely in studio reality - allowing for large items to be moved to the as such roomy main corridor network.

Considering Trek has mastered gravity control perhaps their version of a stretcher rotates to vertical for moving the patient...

There should be some provision for relocating large object within the hull- not everything can fit through those doors or inside a lift car.

Intraship beaming would be the obvious choice in the 24th century... But I doubt anything of the sort would apply to the JJVerse, despite many other transporter advances there.

Then again, there are vast openings, chutes and chasms inside the JJPrise. Plenty enough for manhandling elephant cages on antigravs! The lithe Franklin could have something similar if the dramatic need arose.

Timo Saloniemi

It has a roomy engineering powerplant and the saucer's central atrium core, other than that in both the movies and films, I see no "chams" which in the true sense, would dwarf a starship anyway.

The turbolifts don't need to be big enough for a stretcher. You just get a stout Scotsman to carry the injured party to the bridge. Or wherever the Scotsman feels like going at that particular moment.

Yup, she's...kind of tiny. Her armament looks a lot like the Kelvin's.

Edit: Possible toy prototype for her:

I think the saucer is partially visible in one or two of the aerial views looking down on the Memorial Plaza. They go by quickly but that circular area with the funny bumps near the edge of the saucer are moving or spinning.

This starts at a good view, but pause it quickly. Look way down there, sitting on the ground.

ETA hang on, fixing...

ETA2 Is there some way to stop the video from embedding? It ruins adding a video link with a specific start point.

Look near 1:38.

No, down on the ground, the circle fragment with the louver like squares. Great cap though, you got the saucer perfect.

Thanks LOB.
