*SPOILERS* If you could change one thing about the film...

Make Nimoy say less. He's talking to past-Kirk/Spock and tells them they will be best friends, basically giving them the idea instead and setting them on the path instead of letting it happen naturally.

Within the movie, I got the impression that was useful in getting them to work together better. However, I don't think Nimoy should have been in the movie at all.

Lengthen the emotional scenes. There were some powerful moments in the film, but they were over so fast, and then it was right back to light-hearted action. If there'd been time to develop a serious emotional punch, it might have been the greatest Trek movie ever.

Well said. I would add that the movie seemed to be too busy establishing the universe instead of the characters. I would love to have seen more of Kirk and Bones' academy years, flesh out the characters more, get to know them better.

I'd have a toss-up between saving Vulcan and dumping the alternate universe theory.

Ideally I'd do both and keep it a single narrative.

My issues with the film are too central to be fixed by one thing.

A minor improvement would be to cut out at least one cliff-gripping from Kirk. Three is too many.

It was meant to establish Kirk's strong ability to grip. It's called consistency!!

HAHAH!! ;)

I'd have a had a few more static wide shots scattered throughout, especially with the emotional quiet moments on the USS Kelvin. The kelvin bridge never really got fully explored.

I'd cut out the "Kirk is out of line so I'm going to launch him towards that ice planet" thing...it didn't really make sense, and then suddenly oldSpock showed up. A terrific scene with him followed after the dumb killer monster chase, but I'd like to have seen a more organic way to introduce him into the narrative w/o inexplicably punting Kirk off the ship and conveniently running into Spock.

I would have made the film a bit longer and would have added some of Nero's background from the Countdown comics and his Rura Penthe scene.

There are so many things I'd like to change that it is almost impossible to choose just one. But if I did have to change just one thing I'd save Vulcan.

I would have made the film a bit longer and would have added some of Nero's background from the Countdown comics and his Rura Penthe scene.

Seconded. I also felt that the final climax needed a little more suspense to it. I felt myself kind of thinking..."that's it?" as the crew was reacting to getting out in one piece.

All in all I think it just needed maybe 30 minutes more to spend more time on Nero as well as Kirk's time at the Academy which both felt rushed to me. I don't think an extra half hour would have hurt, as the 2 hours flew by as it was.

Well the taking Kirk off the ship made sense - Spock wanted him off the ship, he was too much of a nuisance, and he was a little emotionally unhinged as well, as became important later. Ejecting him in the pod made logical sense to him, and it wasn't just some random ice planet, he was put down 14km from a Starfleet base.

I wouldn't have minded at all if this was a reboot.

When Uhura said something like "SO we may be in an alternate universe," I though to myself: No! You're doing great! Just go with it!

How would you have done that? Had Kirk an Nero fight while some timer clicked down in the background?:cardie:

The movie really embodied the Original Series. The visuals were stunning, the ship looked incredible....

All of the good parts of the movie could have stayed in.

That's what I mean--how could the good parts have stayed without the time travel? The scene at the opening, with George Kirk sacrificing himself to save his crew, the meeting between Spock Prime and young Kirk and the Spock/Sarek conversation in the wake of Amanda's death wouldn't have made any sense without some story element to tie them together. That thread was Nero's incursion into the past. What would you have replaced it with?

George Kirk could have died fighting some random Romulan ship, the meeting between Spock Prime and Kirk felt out of place and contrived "Oh, noes Spock sent me to some random Ice planet and..oh look there's another Spock here and he's telling we are best budies so I better try to be his friend now" instead of that happening naturally and the Spock/Sarek conversation had nothing to do with Time Travel as far I remember.
The "Kirk tries to emotionaly compromise Spock" scene could have simply happened during their first confrontation (the one that lead Spock to sending Kirk away)
Scoty could already be aboard the Enterprise.
Nero could simply be some Romulan Commander with an advanced prototype..(Yes, Balance of Terror Mark 2.0)

The movie was about Kirk's and Spock's growing pains. The time travel felt tacked on to appease to silly continuity humpers.
It's the only thing I would change.

The only thing I would have changed is added a scene to the end of emty space where the dog would suddenly rematerialize. :D

I would have made Uhura the First Officer in the end and not Spock. Uhura needs to be more important than just someone who sits back and reacts to the guys doing things.

If I could change one thing it would be the script.

I wouldn't have Kirk as captain at the end. The only way I wouldn't change that is to change his character at the beginning from cadet to Kirk already an officer of several years but due to him been a tool he is going nowhere in his career.

The biggest change would probably be to Nero, I would give him much more screen time and try and work out how to make him a more memorable villian because as it is it is really a waste to have such a talented actor as Bana in the role.

The other change I would have a scene that shows the Naranda smash either the Federation or Klingon fleet to make it seem more impressive because on screen it wasn't all that flash but off screen we hear it is owning everything it meets.
