In terms of race, Star Trek has always been very progressive. The original Star Trek had the first on-screen interracial kiss. DS9 had an African-American captain. Voyager even had an African-American Vulcan.

However, Star Trek has never really addressed the issue of homosexuality. I think that the new movie would have been a great opportunity to have the first openly gay Star Trek character and that Spock would have been the logical choice (pardon the pun).
