Spock News

"DISAPPEARED INTO THAT REGION APPROXIMATELY 18 YEARS AGO. THE TALOS GROUP HAS NEVER BEEN EXPLORED. SOLAR SYSTEM SIMILAR TO EARTH: 11 PLANETS. Number 4 appears to be Class M... oxygen atmosphere."

I just realized it's not so much that Cage-Spock shouts. It's more that he talks like Wolf Blitzer IN THE SITUATION ROOM!

What we will learn is a lot of what made him the Spock that he was and what will make him the Spock he is, has to do with his family and his sister.

Ok, now this is where it gets a little precarious. Burnham is the main character so she is going to get a lot of importance. I get it. But retconning her into playing a foundational role in the development of such an important character as Spock, risks catapulting her comfortably over into Mary Sue territory.

Not trying to come off as anti-Burnham. Quite the opposite. Why not allow her character to gain prominence on her own within her own story? Artificially inflating her importance by making her responsible for "making Spock the Spock we know" risks cheapening them both.

Depends on how it's handled. If it's the entire family in general, that's one thing. If it's Burnham shaped Spock's life, that's something else. If growing up with Burnham gives Spock more experience with humans, that might make him more apt to join Starfleet and serve on a ship crewed by mostly humans than otherwise. Maybe he and Burnham have some kind of sibling rivalry.

It's possible it's easier for Spock to appear more Vulcan than he is when he's surrounded by a bunch of humans. But, when he's surrounded by only Vulcans, that's when he suffers in comparison. So Burnham helps him to make him feel more Vulcan at her expense. Sounds horrible but it does sound like a sibling-type relationship.

I hope Pike and Spock aren't treated sacred. Though I'm confident they won't be.

Well at least we know we're getting young adult Spock in Starfleet, not kiddo Spock back on Vulcan.

From the posted article:
Alex Kurtzman: The Spock that we meet is ten years [before Star Trek: The Original Series]. So, he is not formed in the same way that he is formed by the time you get to TOS. What we will learn is a lot of what made him the Spock that he was and what will make him the Spock he is, has to do with his family and his sister.

I liked that up to the part where we find out Spock is who he is partly because of his sister. I suppose that does make sense because the show is about Burnham, but I don't any interest in the revisionist history on Spock, only in seeing him on the bridge of the Enterprise with Pike and Number One.

Rvisionist history and providing backstory are two different things.

How can one 'revise' something we really don't have a clue about?
Other than his adventure as a boy with his "Cousin" and pet Shelat, we don't have any detailed info about his early years.
And I doubt They are going to revise anything from "Yesteryear" as that is the only definitive info we do have.

Is anyone asking for this? Why do this? Just make Discovery with your Discovery characters and go out and Discover.

I say this, meanwhile I think Pike's a great addition given the trailer.

Spock being who he is partly because of his sister can mean many things. Also we don't know a lot about Spock during this time apart from that he serves on the Enterprise, and is probably estranged from his parents and by extension Burnham
