Hey, you guys should read this Uhura/Spock fan fic. It continues the storyline. I'm usually really critical of fan fiction. I don't waste my time if it's crap. But I've gotta admit, this one is pretty damn good.
Thanks for the book passage, Jeri. I won't have the book until next week (the horrors of being in France and having to order everything in English from UK).
Am I the only one who's glad that they didn't film the scene as it is in the book?

This line is a no-no for me, even for nuSpock. He may be more in touch with his human side, but you can see (if only in the turbolift scene) that he has trouble expressing those feelings. I'm glad they didn't keep that line in the movie. And Spock's tone, at least in the French version, isn't that tender.
WAIT. This line wasn't in the movie, right? Because I've only seen the French dubbed version and it isn't there. Wouldn't want to look more stupid than I already am
And this line?! "Her first name is..." He broke off, careful not to stray from the transporter pad on which he stood. "How'd you pull that one off?"
Either I'm misunderstanding its meaning, either it's tacky. Again, glad they didn't keep that one.
IMO, they don't need a third person to bring a little difficulty in their relationship. And do we need any big bumps in that relationship anyway? For my part, I'd be glad to just see it resuming in the next movie, as something nice in the background. As much as I'm a romantic and like this relationship, I was glad that it wasn't featured more in STXI.
I forgot to quote this very interesting post (I think it was one of yours, seven14. And yes, you should write some fic) about what Spock could have found interesting in Uhura and how no one ever wondered what Uhura found in Spock. It's true, I've never stopped to question a woman's attraction to Spock, be it young Prime Spock or nuSpock because it was like, obvious to me
I like this relationship because Uhura isn't pressuring Spock to be someone else, to behave in any other way than he does, she just accepts him as he is and after loosing his mother, he's certainly going to need someone like this. And Uhura may want to bang her head in frustration some times but I can't help to think she's a very lucky woman

We are of the same mind about a triangle. And I think that "subtle elegance" is a very adequate term for Spock/Uhura.I love most of your ideas but I've been saying to myself that one of the ways they could ruin Spock/Uhura is by creating a triangle. I was thinking more of Kirk, but I think that any nod in that direction could come off as too heavy handed. If it were a series, it might be different. I wouldn't want the subtle elegance of Spock/Uhura tarnished (which doesn't mean I don't think we should see them in "private" moments!).

I really don't want a triangle, definitely not with Kirk involved, but I was just thinking of other scenarios for Uhura and Spock to be embroiled in...just to have a sub plot running through the movie to keep them active and a couple...I don't want lingering looks or Uhura always being left behind while the men go exploring... I want Spock and Uhura to have a substantive relationship...nothing major to take the audience away from the main plot...but I don't want them to have a relationship that is understood but never henceforth mentioned ...this first movie for me set the bar high and I want them to keep going forward

Yes, I agree with this, especially the part about Uhura NOT being left behind. I expect to see her importance to be at least at the level of McCoy's, and it would be nice if there was another continuing female character so that she doesn't come off as a token. Nice that the altered timeline allows such differences to occur!
I think there are bound to be issues stemming from Uhura and Spock's cultural differences, but I'd be happier if these were part of a B plot rather than the A plot.

Like a lot of people I found it pretty jarring when I heard about this romance, but the actors' chemistry and the rewritting of Uhura (and angst-ville for Spock) helped pull it off. I'm interested in seeing where they go with this. If they wanted to throw Uhura in bed with one of the guys, Spock was by far the best choice.
And on top of that, Saldana's Uhura is very different from the more passive, ladylike Uhura of yore. This Uhura is forthright and assertive in a way the old one never was. And because of that, she "clicks" better with Spock, who needs an alpha female to keep him in line and he knows it.

That would be an unmitigated disaster and must be avoided at all costs. There is no way to pull it off without it being a horrible, stupid cliche, and completely unnecessary. One shipboard romance, fine. But stop there before we jump feet first into soap territory.
Just to repeat what I said in page 16 or something. I think they played the Spock Uhura angle very well. Its so much better than Kirk Uhura which would have been predictable and dull. No romance at all wouldn't please Hollywood execs. They didn't overplay it, it was just there. Well, they played it just a bit. As most characters interaction it was handled well.
For the next movie, I think they should continue with it. They should continue to not overplaying it. As them being a couple is just there, but doesn't define any of those characters in their official capacity.
They possibly can be closer if its yet another emotional movie for Spock, or Uhura. Or maybe she can 'have a talk' with Spock if he become too stuck up with his logic (if Spock decides to be a Vulcan again between those movies).

Exactly! I don't want to see too much. Just to know that it's there is more than enough. I have enough imagination to fill in the blanks
Speaking of the book v. movie difference, I noticed something that was in both. Now the passage says that McCoy picks up on it although the scene in the movie is even more subtle than that.
It's the part when Spock comes back to the bridge after the choke'aKirk scene, when the A-team is having the office meeting about how to position the ship to attack Nero. Spock agrees with Chekov's assessment. Then he has the line of Romulans and "Vulcans share a common ancestery...Also my mother was human, which makes Earth the only home I have left."
At the begining of that speech he's looking at everyone and when he mentions Earth being his home, his eyes swing completely to the edge of the group and he's speaking directly and only to Uhura.
Le sigh.

I would like to add on to my previous post. Here's a screenshot. Ever since becoming a diehard fan of Lie to Me, I have become obsessive with body language in entertainment and politics. Here's a screenshot that shows everyone looking away at the end of that speech and Uhura is the only one looking at Spock (and he at her), so yeah...
This to me says sooooo much more than any other scene with them outside of the turbolift.
He's silently calling her...home.
This also leads me to believe that there is something more inbetween them, like sex.
I have to give to JJ, the body language and timeing of this scene is spectacularly impressive.
