Spielberg looking to make the next 2001?

'Interstellar' project

if a major filmmaker like Spielberg is making an effort to produce a film that's actually grounded in credible science rather than the usual fantasy fluff and lazy, incoherent rubbish, that is something to be celebrated.
Just saw this about Interstellar tentatively for 2012. Very cool that Speilberg is going for scifi in a big way with this project.

I don't know how you can make a scientifically accurate film that takes place in another dimension.

It's from a treatment by Kip Thorne. He's a major theoretical physicist who's done seminal work on wormhole physics, building on Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. A wormhole, or Einstein-Rosen-Podowlsky bridge, is a conduit of spacetime connecting two separate regions of spacetime, which could be different places or times within our universe or could be two separate universes. "Dimension" is very much a misnomer here, but the idea that our universe may be one of many is increasingly accepted by physicists, and there's nothing in the laws of physics to preclude the possibility.

And as I said before, science is a predictive process. If you can postulate what the physical parameters of that other universe would be -- such as how many dimensions it has, what its mass/energy density is, what the relative strengths of its forces are, etc. -- you can calculate how physics would behave there, and thus depict it in a scientifically accurate way.

Yeah, this is modern Spielberg we're talking about here, so whatever he's planning it's likely to be corny as shit.
