Spidey OUT of MCU

Disney basically asked for ten times more than they were getting before plus control of sony's flagship character. Disney was greedy. I understand with all the new properties Feige has.. he doesn't have time to produce movies that his company only gets 5% of, but upping it TEN TIMES is ridiculous

Spidey's presence in the MCU is more important to Marvel Studios than it is to Sony, because Far From Home laid the foundarion for a story that isn't dependent on a shared universe in order for it to work.

No, because one of those things has absolutely nothing to do with the other.
"Water is wet, and tacos are delicious." Two statements don't have to directly connect for both statements to be true.

Yes, Disney made an unreasonably greedy offer, and yes, the success of Venom has likely led the suits at Fox to conclude that they can make bank even on a garbage product if it's got enough name recognition and CG effects.

Feige has so MUCH to do.. so many properties but a single studio can only do so much.. I think Disney made an unreasonable offer so that they didn't HAVE to make Spidey films.. (unless Sony bought into the unreasonable demands)

That makes no sense, since Disney positioned Spider-Man to be the center of the MCU going forward.

Which was reasonable - Spider-Man is Marvel's biggest character.

Well, they'll solder on with X-Men and Fantastic Four, I guess. Hope Disney doesn't fuck up Deadpool too badly.

I hate to defend Disney in ANY way, but they ARE responsible for the huge returns on the character, and Sony is making more money off of it now then they ever dreamed of previously. 50/50 may have been a bit too high, but Disney definitely deserves a bigger piece of the pie. Avengers / MCU have directly led to the success of the Spider Man movies.

Sony has been angling towards a, for lack of a better phrase, Spider-verse of their own anyway, with the rumors about a Sinister Six film, Venom, etc.
But the 'other' characters aren't exactly great are they ? Venom's probably the best, and he's not that great. Spidey's much vaunted rogues gallery are actually pretty poor. Kraven, Goblin, Mysterio, Vulture, all of 'em. Even Doc Ock's more interesting as Superior Spider-man...

No way where they trying to ditch Spidey. They were trying to get more money feeling they had the upperhand. They most likely didn't but the fan outrage proably has Sony spooked so people are still talking about making it work. Jason

I could be wrong, but my understanding was that they were proposing a more even split in the financing (not sure who's responsible for this under the old deal), in return for trading Sony 50% of the Spider-Man merchanising revenue (currently they get zero, even from movie specific merch), for an improved share of the ticket revenue (50% proposed, but I think the op-eds that suggest they would have accepted a reasonable counterbid, say 25-30%, are plausible).

You're welcome. I enjoyed Venom immensely and cant wait to see an MCU less Spiderman again. :techman:

Yes yes yes, we all know how much you hate the idea of characters interacting and how the outdated approach of pretending characters exist in their own little bubble is the only way to go.

The rest of us are simply getting headaches at the lack of progression by Studio Execs despite the Dollar Signs showing who they favor now.

It remains to be seen whether Disney will use Deadpool at all - his entire character goes squarely against their brand, and they're so rich they can afford to pass up the easy money a third movie promises if they so choose.

Do you think Disney wants their MCU guy to produce all the properties they already have, all the NEW properties tehy just got with Fox, plan out 6 or 7 years of films ahead, and still somehow spend extra time producing a film that Sony owns and will get the profits from? Under what universe do you think they want this ?

It's highly unlikeky that Disney would've given Sony half of the profits from Spidey merch, so I don't know where you got that idea from.

Negotiations broke down because Sony rejected Disney's demand for a 50/50 profit split and then Disney didn't come back with any other proposals.

it makes sense because ultimately it's Sony's character
Actually it's Marvel's character, Sony is just making the movies. Everything else related to the character belongs to Marvel.
there is only so much a studio can physically do
I'm pretty sure they can handle one more character.

I'm pretty sure when they release a Deadpool movie they'll release it under the Fox banner rather than a Disney one.

Spider-Man is their biggest flagship characters, so I'm pretty sure they want him in the MCU. I find it very hard to believe that the MCU team is really so overwhelmed that they would purposefully sabotage negotiations related to the company's biggest character. If they were really that overwhelmed I would think they would skip one of the more minor characters, like Shang Chi or The Eternals.
I have to wonder if the 50/50 was a serious offer or if they were expecting Sony to come back with something smaller, only for them to just say no and walk away. The big rule with negotiating is always supposed to be that you start with a ridiculous amount hopping that the other side will then come back with a more realistic offer, and I can't help but wonder if that was what Disney was trying to do, only for Sony to just say no and walk away rather than come back with a counter offer.

OK, but they walked away because Sony wouldn't make any kind of counter offer, so my point is still valid.
