Spider-Man: Far From Home anticipation thread

Third watch and I just noticed the suitcase used to belong to Uncle Ben (nice touch!) and Avenger/Stark tower appears to have been demolished and a new building erected in it's place. So what do we think? Baxter building or Oscorp?

I’ve already read comments online and people are assuming this takes place after Infinity War. They are clearly coming back from their field trip at the beginning of IW.

Maybe I missed that part. But it has to take place before Infinity War. I’d be disappointed if it took place after.
Prepare for disappointment. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal have both said that the movie picks up minutes after Infinity War. Plus, Tom Holland still has one more movie on his contract.

^ I might regret asking this question, but what relevence does Far From Home's timeline placement have to either its quality as a film or your interest in it?

I wanted the film to be before Infinity War largely because of how May discovers Peter's identity. Hopefully Far From Home covers this in the opening moments of the film since it's after Endgame, especially considering how open she is in supporting him in that role as seen in the trailer.

I think we're going back to the Avengers Tower and Thano's almost levels it in "Endgame"

Sort of coming full circle for the end of the current Avengers. First united battle and last battle

Well, the MCU Spider-Man is officially worse then the Garfield one. I guess the offscreen MCU Uncle Ben never gave him the speech about power and responsibility, since no other version of Spider-Man would have left their fucking costume at home with the intention of just not helping people for (presumably) weeks. The actual Spider-Man would take his fucking costume to his honeymoon, a funeral, hell he'd be wearing it under his clothes if he was in a hospital waiting room waiting for his wife to give birth, just in case. Outside of the one storyline where he tries to give up his responsibility but realizes he can't (which was used well in Spider-Man 2), Spidey doesn't go "Eh, fuck the suit, no one in Europe could possibly need my help".

At best its extreme stupidity/naivete, at worst its Peter being a giant piece of shit. This is why "realistic" teen heroes are even worse then DC's attempts at "realistic" heroes, because most teenagers are selfish assholes and that's not a particularly compelling type of character for a superhero movie. This isn't even in character for this version of Spider-Man. He was so into helping people, he jumped onto a spaceship and went into space. That is not someone who is going to leave their costume at home under any circumstances, even if they don't intend to do active superhero things.

Anyway, Nick Fury was the only good part of that trailer. Mysterio looks like an asshole, and you just know he's going to have to show his face at literally every point where he's not in a CG fight. But, I guess you can't hide the face of the star of such great films as Banging Heath Ledger and The White Prince of Persia, that would just be a tragedy. We also get some scenes showing why I absolutely loathe almost all of Marvels attempts (both in live action and in other media) at doing teen heroes. Even when Peter himself isn't shit, he is surrounded with literally nothing but cliched teen shitheads. That scene near the end with all his classmates made me feel like I was watching the fucking Shazam trailer, and reminding me of the worst superhero film ever conceived is not a good thing.

:guffaw:

So Peter actually quitting and tossing his suit in the garbage in Spider-Man 2 is fine, after directly rejecting the vision of Uncle Ben giving him the great power/great responsibility speech again, which you hold up as sacrosanct, because after-the-fact you liked the reasoning for it. But here, before actually seeing the movie and how the decision plays out and affects him, as you always do, you decide it's the worst thing ever if teenage Peter simply takes a school trip for a few weeks to a completely different continent he's unfamiliar with and without his support network of Aunt May and Happy and Tony Stark (if he's still alive) and temporarily leaves his suit behind with no intention of actually giving up being Spider-Man at all.

Never mind that superheroes take vacations or time off or quit in the comics, films, and TV shows frequently, sometimes leaving behind their suits. Remember when Superman gave up his powers to be with Lois in Superman 2?

Never mind that Spider-Man himself has hung up his suit on several occasions across multiple incarnations of the character, contrary to your claims above.

Refusing the call to adventure is in fact an essential part of Campbell's Hero's Journey which is the framework for most superhero stories. But Peter's not even refusing here, he's just taking a temporary break. But since they started mid-way along the journey with this Spider-Man since we'd seen enough origin stories for Peter Parker already, they're doing a mini version of it here with his mentor Aunt May (she puts the suit in his luggage anyway, as seen in the international trailer) and now Nick Fury coaxing him back into action.

Peter is familiar with Brooklyn and the rest of New York City, and they with him now for the most part. He doesn't know the first thing about fighting in London or Paris or Venice, or whether he would be welcomed there or arrested. He got police after him in Washington DC in Homecoming. Remember all the international (and domestic) restrictions on superheroes because of the Sokovia Accords, though hopefully that will be abolished after Thanos? Plus, Tony (if alive) or Happy or Pepper might not be able to use their connections to get him out of jail as easily if he's caught overseas.

Is a hero less of a hero if they take a vacation? Peter, for all his powers, is still a human being, and a teenager no less. He still feels stress. He can still be overwhelmed. This is after Infinity War and Endgame, don't you think he's earned a few weeks off? Tony needed time to regroup after Avengers. Are firefighters assholes if they take a vacation, or are they required to serve 24/7/365?

Mysterio looks like an asshole
So, a villain then?

Film looks fantastic. Improvements to the flat cinematography from Homecoming. All the humor lands. Seems like a very character-driven movie, with a good balance of spectacle.

I probably won't be watching it in theatres, I'm done with all this after Endgame.. When one turns 30, it's time to stop with these silly films and shows. Buuuut, I can see this grossing a Billion if it is a hit internationally.

Because it's mindless escapism, and life is too short for that.
Plus, even in my 20s, I felt like I had outgrown most of this stuff. It just had nostalgic value to me because I enjoyed this stuff as a kid. Endgame is a great jumping off point.

I mean, if you feel like you've personally outgrown it, that's fine. A blanket statement like "it's time to stop with these when you turn 30" is pretty weird, though.

Just don't forget to actually enjoy the things you do in life. Don't feel like you need to stop enjoying something because of some arbitrary cutoff point.
