SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboot in

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

It's basically typical actor waffle, but Toby Maguire has spoken out on the delay:

Well, if the studio isn't moving the date, then I hope they resolve this soon. I don't want this dragging out and then getting a half ass thrown together movie like X3 because they ran out of time.

If that's the case, I'll go buy me some action figures and make my own Spider-Man 4.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

I'm fine with the delay...if they have gone through three writers and can't decide on a story or what villains to use then maybe this should be put on hold permanently. I've been somewhat conflicted regarding them bringing out a new film so soon after Spider-Man 3. I think they should give the franchise a rest and bring it back in five years with a new director, etc.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

^ So soon after? Spidey 1 was 2002, Spidey 2 was 2004 and 3 was 2007. The gaps are getting longer and longer - the gap between 3 and this one will have a gap at least twice as long as between 1 & 2.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

Plus, Spider-Man isn't like Harry Potter, where you feel you have to keep coming back to finish the story. I think if you wait to long, the audience won't come back as strong unless the film is really solid.

The audience is fickle.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed

Not just delayed -- Spider-Man 4 is officially dead in the water.

BREAKING NEWS! Mike Fleming and I have just confirmed that Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after franchise director Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, Mike Fleming is told, the studio will focus on a reboot script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took place today at meeting on the lot today. An official Sony Pictures news release about it is expected.

My sources tell me that Raimi told Sony Pictures: "I can't make your date. I can't go forward creatively." And, so, once he said "That's it", Sony Pictures co-chairman Pascal and Columbia Pictures' Matt Tolmach decided they didn't want to replace him and instead chose to reboot the franchise. Insiders also tell me that Tobey Maguire heard the news in a phone call with Amy today. I'm told Tobey wasn't upset. "He's made 3 great Spider-Man movies. He's done really well. But he's the kind of guy who, if Sam wanted to go forward, would have been there for Sam and the studio. Absolutely."

Mike Fleming has heard that, from Spidey, Raimi could move to World Of Warcraft, or to The Given Day, that terrific novel by Dennis Lehane, author of Shutter Island and Mystic River. Both are worthy projects, but World Of Warcraft is a huge franchise.

And from Sony's official Twitter:

Spider-Man: Summer 2012: Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

And DC still can't make a Superman movie.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Here's the press release from the studio:

"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three 'Spider-Man' films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"Working on the 'Spider-Man' movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," said Sam Raimi.

"We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else's hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable," said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio's chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. "Now everything begins anew, and that's got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can't wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012."

"'Spider-Man' will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Look out Star Trek 12!! Spidey and his high school buddies are coming for you.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

You know, I don't mind reboots, especially with comic book properties. I think it is somewhat expected. What I don't like is when they reboot something so quickly after the previous series.

Edit: Well, I guess it's not that close. If the new one comes out in 2012, then that'll be 5 years between series.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Hey didn't they go back to the High School years for Dumb and Dumberer and the recent School Doo movie, yaeh those turned out well! LOL IMO, it's too soon to reboot Spiderman, maybe in 10 years but not now.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

Sony has to make a new Spider-Man film in a timely fashion or else they'd lose the film rights, so waiting 10 years is a no go for them.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I don't mind a reboot. Think it would be good for the series. But I agree, they can't wait 10 years to pull it off.

Re: SPIDER-MAN 4 officially delayed - Update: Raimi/Maguire out, reboo

I can't wait to see this series Twilighted. It's gonna' be a train wreck of epic proportions.
