Speeding

Who admits to driving above the speed limit? I admit I do it. But here's the rub; how do you justify doing it?

My justification is that the speed limit is too slow for the grade of road (I never speed in towns). Or am I the only one in the world who does it?

LOL, how does one justify it...

How do you justify stealing? Well, in my opinion it's just way too expensive. And I only steal small stuff, chocolate bars, download movies, etc... not cars or bags of money of anything.

I speed all the time. I just do it to keep up with everyone else, or because I'm in a hurry. My car handled pretty well on the few occasions I've got it up to 140 km/h, but I haven't pushed it much beyond that.

Five-over is my standard "speeding" speed. My justification for doing it: None.

I simply know that I'm unlikely to get pulled over for it since in my state 5-over is a non-moving violation so any "ticket" I would get would pretty much be a parking ticket and not worth the cop's time to bother with me. They're after the real speeders, the ones going 10-over or more.

I've passed cops going five-over the speed limit with no repercussions over my 15 years or so of driving and I've only once gotten a speeding ticket, due to an error in judging the limit of the area I was in. (I was going the speed limit for the road about 500 yards before that actual speed-zone started.)

I view it as standard practice to go above the speed limit and that, as long as I'm careful to maintain proper following distance, there isn't likely to be adverse harm to others. I've modified this approach with an understanding that anything more than 10 over risks legal sanction. So I go somewhere in the middle.

Of course, this state can be draconian about speeding, which is part of an effort to change public perception about its acceptability, but, until the public changes, I doubt I will. Plus, driving long distances takes long enough as it is.

I should say there is a chance our motorway speed limit is going up to 80 mph. Since everyone drives at that speed on the motorways anyway, it's probably going to be enshrined in law.

I'm sure you speed so no doubt this is a bit hypocritical.

I do frequently... because I am going along with the flow of traffic.

While I like this argument, here's the reason I'm not entirely persuaded.

When you see a slow driver obstructing traffic, are you annoyed or relieved that you don't have to drive so fast?

Well I mostly live in the countryside, and one road I use to get to work is just a long 5 mile stretch with only fields on either side. So if its late on a night or early on a morning with little cars around (or if I'm late) I'll go about 70-80 (the limit being 60.) If there are any kids playing about in the middle of that road they deserve to get run over.

What's worse is there are TONNES of people who use that road who refuse to go over 50 or worse 40mph. Getting stuck behind them unable to overtake is simply infuriating. I can't believe they wouldn't know its not a 60 road. Maybe they don't mind meandering along at a slow speed, but I have to get to work, some of us actually have things to do and places to go and don't have tonnes of free time to do it in.
And if you're someone (mostly elderly in my experiece) who doesn't feel comfortable driving over 40/50 mph, then YOU SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING

Oh I know that scenario. We all do. A big line of speeders come across someone in the outside lane actually doing the speed limit and every second person is thinking oh thank god.

I dont speed period, if its 30 MPH then its 30mph, if its 40mph then its 40mph and so on........i have no problems sticking to these posted speed limits at all.

Don't get me wrong, there are times when I'm relieved that I don't have to keep up ridiculous speeds (the safe speed on the Jersey turnpike is sometimes 90 miles an hour), but I still think the general sentiment when you see a slow driver is "Why can't you move into the right lane instead?"

Well, for one. During the last five years, the "highway" i usually drive on had its speed limit lowered from 120kph (74.5mph) to 80kph (49.7mph). Now 70kph because of roadworks.

Now this is beyond ridiculous. By the time I retire, cars will be banned. Or the guy with the red flag in front of every car will return. Hell, one politician wants to ban every car with more than 130bhp. Justification? Everything above that is unnecessary and the car will only pollute the environment even more. My Merc has 131bhp. If the law passes, I'm buggered.

However, I never, ever, drive above the 30kph speed limit in front of schools, hospitals and the like. Thats my unwritten law. 60kph on 50 roads or 100-110 on 90 roads I'm fine with. But the 30kph limit is sacred. My philsosphy is if you can drive safely at that speed, I'm fine with it.

Exactly. It pisses me off when one driver decides to hold up the whole highway by getting alongside a truck and doing 50 in the left-hand lane. Never mind that the actual speed limit is 55. The sane people generally do 70-80 and the really crazy people do well upwards of that.

Where I live, if you don't speed on the interstates, you're likely to have people cut in and out in front of you in a very dangerous way. The laws of physics do not matter to people here and the only "law" people respect is you physically blocking their way in a way that's so obvious they wouldn't dare cut across your bumper. Driving is very, very aggressive here, and if you aren't on top of your game, you're screwed.

I know this is not what defensive driving is supposed to be about, but the only way to stop that kind of behavior is to drive fast--very fast--and hold your speed even if the other driver starts looking at you like they want to change lanes (and if you are unwilling to use your turn signal, it doesn't count and you're not going to get anywhere with me).

I don't speed on surface streets (much) though. Too much to worry about with pedestrians who jaywalk without any regard for oncoming traffic even on the most congested of streets.

I like this speeding thing. It's exciting.

Seriously though, I do speed often. Usually between five and ten MPH over the limit. If I'm in town I keep it limited to around five.

On the highways, I've been known to go as fast as 85 or 90 on occasion. But I usually keep to the five to ten range.

How do I justify it? Because.... that's how. :p

If by slow you mean going the speed limit, I'm not bothered. 10 MPH under the limit, however, is quite annoying.

I'm so used to driving faster than the limit that it bugs the hell out of me. Then again, everyone drives faster than allowed so you'll just hold up the traffic.

On a sidenote; I've only done this twice in my life. But my record on public roads is 288(179mph) and 282kph(175mph). First with a Peugeot 205 GTI (UNG-20 Spec.) and the second with an Audi V8 on a Sunday morning. Probably could've gotten over the 300kph but by then there was a car in front of me and i had to slow to a legal speed. Had roughly 20km without any traffic at all.
