Speculations on the future events of DS9-R (SPOILERS)

After reading Feaful Symmetry, I've become really excited about Olivia Woods' followup, The Soul Key! Apparently, this is going to be the one that resolves the whole Kira/Ileana/Taran'atar/alternate universe/Sidau fragment storyline.

But there are a lot of things within the DS9 universe that have so far been left unresolved for so long. The one thing that I'm really anticipating is the next chapter in the whole Eav'oq/Ascendants storyline. And if Kira's vision from Warpath is any indication, events will come to a head pretty soon. Then there's the whole fate of the Odo, Laas and the Dominion itself. And then there's the matter of Sisko's "mirror" counterpart! Is he alive or dead or what? And exactly how will Commander Vaughn be "betrayed" in the next story?

There's just so much going on in the DS9 universe these days! And while I welcome each and every book that's come out within the past couple of years (Warpath, Hollow Men, the Terok Nor trilogy or Fearful Symmetry) - whether they relate to pre- or post-series events - I really, truly wish there was more sometimes. (Although I do know the changing of authors on Fearful Symmetry is partly responsible for the long delay.)

Not to mention that I'm kind of curious as to precisely when the events of DS9-R will catch up to what's going on with TNG, Titan, New Frontier, etc. I understand that Captain Ezri Dax is going to play a prominent role in David Mack's upcoming Destiny books. To what extent will we find out what's happened in the DS9 universe from two years after the end of the series to the "present" day?

And I would also be interested in other readers' opinions or speculations on just what will happen to the characters of DS9 and how events will unfold! I predict that Kira and Ileana will have a confrontation, a showdown, and that Taran'atar will be the one responsible for turning the tide when things start to look most bleak! But hey, that's just what I'm predicting. What does everybody else think?

Re: Speculations on the future events of DS9-R

There's been some info posted on Ezri in one of the other threads:

Ezri's crew on the Aventine includes Sam Bowers, Mikaela Leishman and Simon Tarses - and she got her captaincy so quickly after switching to the command track after a battlefield promotion.

Which means we've got some big mind-blowing battle coming up in the DS9 Relaunch at some point - presumably when we finally meet the Ascendants. Ezri doesn't die - but someone else, possibly Vaughn, does in order for her to get a battlefield promotion. Bowers, Leishman and Tarses survive.

Re: Speculations on the future events of DS9-R

Does a surperior have to die for someone to get a battlefield promotion?.

Re: Speculations on the future events of DS9-R

As I understood it, battlefield promotions are offered when someone of a specific rank is required but nobody of that rank is alive and Jadzia commanded the Defiant as a Lieutenant Commander - so a major promotion to Captain, when Ezri's now just a Lieutenant, wouldn't be necessary if she just takes command of the Defiant during a battle. Perhaps Kira is incapacitated and Vaughn dies - and Ezri is given a battlefield promotion to the rank of Commander and given command of Deep Space Nine?

She serves as XO briefly, then gets the Aventine?

Re: Speculations on the future events of DS9-R

I see, I just hope they don't kill Vaughn anytime soon. I have another idea though, may she's reassigned to the Aventine as XO, and it's Captain gets killed.

Re: Speculations on the future events of DS9-R

True. But then we'd need to bring the Aventine into the DS9 Relaunch at some point in the future - have the Aventine seriously damaged in a battle whilst Ezri is onboard, they're transporting Ezri somewhere to do something, and Akaar promotes her to Captain until the situation is dealt with - she shows excellence and so the promotion is retained.

that's what I was thinking when I read Mack's spoilers.

Re: Speculations on the future events of DS9-R

It doesn't have to be death for a battlefield promotion; Riker was given such a promotion to captain after Picard was taken by the Borg, and would probably have retained the post and title had Picard elected to retire following that traumatic experience. I could imagine a scenario where the Aventine is found either entirely depopulated or having lost most of its senior officers, and Vaughn battlefield-promotes his XO to captain her while he retains command of the Defiant in an immediate conflict (then the promotion sticks).

Also, refresh my memory, but wasn't Data given a temporary promotion when he took command of the Sutherland to stop the Romulans?

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I have a feeling we won't be getting much movement on the Ascendants storyline till at least 2013, with the DS9 20th anniversary. :(

What with the huge amount of novels and series out there now and others currently in the works, a pessimistic person would say the DS9 Relaunch has fallen by the wayside.

As DP mentioned, the author switch on Fearful Symmetry certainly played a role in this, and with Soul Key needed to wrap up those storylines, and the next DS9 book after that (based on pure speculation from the title - but hey, that's the thread, right?) dealing with the Cardassians, I'd guess Pocket is saving the big stuff till the anniversary, when we may get another flush of novels like in the first years of the Relaunch. Which would be sweet, but damn, I really wish we didn't have to wait that long.

Now, I'm sure any of the authors around here now much better than I what the plans are, but will they correct me? Or would that be giving too much away? ;)

Re: Speculations on the future events of DS9-R

My theory about Sisko's betrayal of Vaughn is that the mirror Sisko won't actually become the emissary of that universe. Maybe he really is dead, maybe he'll die in the course of the story, maybe he'll just refuse. Which leaves one of the two characters from our universe to take his place and stay in the MU as its Emissary...

OK, not that likely, but I think it's a neat idea.

Err, has that pessimistic person seen the new schedule announcements? There are two consecutive DS9-R novels coming out in the latter half of 2009. Also in '09 we're getting two Titan novels, two VGR novels, two Vanguard novels, and one each of TOS, TNG, and ENT (not counting reprints). 2009 is the most balanced year Pocket has had in a long time (since it contains no major anniversaries), and DS9 is as well-represented as any other series in '09, more so than several.

Re: Speculations on the future events of DS9-R

Er, I actually mentioned the two forthcoming 2009 DS9 novels in the post, Chris (Can I call you Chris? Apologies if I'm not supposed to).

I was more referring to recent years when other series and novels "seemed" to take precedence over DS9. That's not to say I blame anyone or am angry over it, as all those other series have been on the whole fantastic. And I am very pleased by the 2009 schedule's balance of novels and look forward to almost everything on it (my wallet on the other hand...).

I was just lamenting that we'll probably never see another onslaught of DS9 books like we had when the series first began. That time was magical, and the Relaunch had this incredible momentum. The series is still top notch and I'll grab anything that comes out related to it of course, but I just miss that feeling that it had when it first began.

In short, I'm just a greedy little DS9 Relaunch monkey. :D

Re: Speculations on the future events of DS9-R

Of course, technically we got 4 DS9 books this year, counting the Terok Nor trilogy. I'm starting to think that's where most of the criticism is coming from - the prequel series was cool but people are thinking 'damn, we could have had another Mission: Gamma'.

That's pretty much what I've been thinking as well.

Vaughn basically had his life put back on track by the Prophets, much like Sisko did. I'm betting that was done for a reason.

No, it's coming from the fact that Fearful Symmetry, as an individual book in the post-finale series, didn't do enough to maintain the momentum of that series. Terok Nor has nothing to do with it.

I also had that same thought, that Vaughn would be the one who had to take on the Emissary role in the MU, because the Sisko there really was dead, or refuses to take the job.
