Speculations on the bridge

Since it's going to be some time (I'm sure) before we see any 'official' photos of the new bridge, I figure there's plenty of time to speculate what it might look like.

If anything would be a given, I'm guessing it's the idea of the captain's chair sitting directly behind the helm/nav console, all facing the viewscreen. Beyond that, how much of the original TOS design will remain is anyone's guess.

One of the things I really liked about the TMP refit of the bridge was the idea of two turbolift shafts, on either side of the communications station (I think). I sort of hope that the new design incorporates that, it sort of made sense to have two means of egress to and from the bridge.

Basically, I want to be wowed by the bridge design. I want it to look even more real than the refit bridge (which looked pretty damn good back in 1979).

Based on the sole photo we have seen, http://trekmovie.com/images/st08setchat2.jpg, the new bridge appears to have a few features that we can consider 'defined':

1) No or few physical buttons, mainly touchscreens
2) Brighter, more dynamic displays
3) Gunmetal Grey coloring for the walls

The baseline arrangement will be there, but modified... but I believe the visual look will remind us more of the Star Trek V/VI bridge in terms of colors and dynamicism. Of course, this is based on a small pic of half a station that JJ Abrams is sitting at while sending messages on a laptop, so what the **** do I know? :techman:

In TMP the Science station was directly behind the conn, with the turbolifts flanking it. In TWOK, the science station was returned to its flamiliar spot to the starboard of conn, with an auxliary systems monitor placed between the lifts.

Basically, I want to be wowed by the bridge design. I want it to look even more real than the refit bridge (which looked pretty damn good back in 1979).

I am certain we will be wowed... love it or hate it, we'll all be saying WOW!

If this photo, from an earlier set of 'released' (read: liberated) set photos, isn't from the Enterprise/another starship:

...then it's probably from that dirty/dusty shuttle from the same set, which would reflect a broad interface design ethic within the Federation or Starfleet among the various classes of its vessels.

Except I don't think that it is. Unless I'm mistaken, that photo accompanied a report about Abrams conducting a live Q&A chat from one of the stations on the Enterprise bridge set, and is not from one of the sets of "liberated" spy photos which we've seen.

Thanks for the clarification on the J.J. pic, because I had been under the impression that was taken in one one of the shuttle sets, not the bridge.

Even so, it doesn't give away a lot of detail, just teases us quite a bit!

If the bridge isn't offset exactly 36° degrees to port,...I'm not only boycotting but also protesting, raping, and pillaging.

Q : Speculations on the bridge....

1. It'll be over troubled waters....

2. It'll be round, not square, not rectangular, not even oval, but round....

3. There will be a turbo-lift, as in 1 turbo-lift not 2 turbo-lifts....

4. There will be a massive view screen, LCD, plasma, HD, who cares, there will be one, and only one on one side of the bridge....

5. There will be 6 full stations and 2 half stations on the bridge....
( If the view screen above is really large then just 6 full stations )

6. There will be a railing for whoever is playing Mister Leslie to fall over when the ship is hit by phaser / photon torpedo fire from the bad guys....

7. It'll be just tall enough to have a lower level, that's why there's railing on the upper level you silly goose....

8. It'll be big enough to fit not only the bridge crew but cameras, mikes, etcetera for filming.... ( duh )

9. It'll be on the TOP of the ship, not the bottom, not the middle, nor SPANNING over a physical body of water.... ( #1 is a metaphor silly )

10. It'll look recognizable to the average schmuck ;)

But will the viewscreen be off-set to one side?
It better be, or a lot of people WILL boycott this movie. ;)

In my geekiest moments, I find myself complaining that when the ship stops suddenly Kirk, Sulu, and Chekov should actually fall slightly towards their right, NOT lean straight forward in their chairs as we have often seen them do ;).

This, of course is due to the fact that the screen, Captain's chair, and the nav & helm console are all actually skewed to the left of the ship's direction of motion.

I wonder if that was intentional?

But not burning and looting? Squiggy, you disappoint me.

Now there's a question: will the immortal and indestructible Mr. Leslie be in the movie? I don't know if this has been discussed yet.

Okay, that's pretty geeky.

Technically there was more than one way off the Bridge during TOS, just not Canon though. There was the standard Turbolift, a kick-out panel near the Turbolift which went into a corridor circumventing the Bridge to a stairwell to Deck 2 and then there was supposedly a hatch in the floor in front the Helm and Navigation console. Before they added the extra Exit (Turbolift?) in TAS to the Bridge that would've made about three ways off the Bridge.

Now that I've thought about it a bit, nope, it hasn't been discussed yet.

* Perhaps it should be ? *

It'll be bald and bad ass! :D

I think it'll look similiar to the TOS one only bigger and slicker.
I'm actually hoping it'll be a bit smaller - at least in feel if not in actual dimensions. Kinda like the Pike-era bridge from The Cage.

Though preferably without the goose-neck viewscreens. ;)

while yes it makes sense there was a stairwell to the bridge it begs the question why were they trapped in space seed.

Chekov was probably hiding in there, which is why we didn't see him in the ep but Khan recognized him in STII.

JJ's fate depends on the conclusion of Squiggy's protractor...

Damn straight.

Hey buddy!

Haven't run into you in these forums for close to two weeks now. Heard you were in some of them killing time since you weren't allowed back into the TNZ just yet. Wanted to let you know a lot of us miss you over there and can't wait for your toady, Zach Braff-esque ass to come back!

Now...get naked. Service me. And tell me more about the new TREK XI bridge.
