Space Station 76

Joel_Kirk

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
This movie can either fail or succeed based on the execution since the premise is ambiguous. Is it primarily about relationships between the sexes set on a space station? A commentary on gender roles in the 1970s? Do aliens make an appearance? Is 'race' explored in this film? (The film can turn out to be a one-note joke).

However, I do like the way there seems to be some inspiration on the space station which seems like a mixture from "Space: 1999," "Silent Running," and a couple of other film and tv shows from that era.

This looks like something I may actually see in the theater, but that will probably be based on the word-of-mouth and reviews.

Saw it a couple days ago.

Very slow.

After 20 minutes, I fast forwarded looking for juicy bits.

Meh.

It's a pity because the trailer I saw a year ago looked very impressive.

Yeah, it seems to be avialable On Demand in some markets, though my local cable company has yet to get it.

^^

Also, interesting....and sad. (I just saw the rating on IMDB).

It looked like it could have revived a little genre of retro-sci-fi....(e.g. "UFO" and the other aforementioned sci-fi shows).

I'm skeptical of ratings on IMDB. It already had ratings before it was released. And I know this movie is going to appeal to a niche market already just based on the tone and premise. I'm going to reserve judgement until I see it. This kind of movie is one I'm pretty sure I will appreciate.

Yeah, IMDB is iffy in it's ratings even after the movie is released. (Even Rotten Tomatoes is iffy at times). However, sometime - emphasis on 'sometimes' - one can get a general sense of a film by its ratings (which can be due to people grading a movie up or down based on their like or dislike of an actor, director, or they based any film they like as a '10,' or a film they dislike as a '1').

This movie can turn out to be similar to "Iron Sky," which turned out to be a movie you either found clever or stupid. Still, I think I'll have to wait until it's released and I hear the reviews and word of mouth to decide whether or not I'll see this in theaters. (I rarely spend money in theaters these days because not many movies that are released or worth my time).

Iron Sky, at least, was fun and interesting. Space Station 76, despite having the elements to be the same way, fell flat in every way, shape, and form. It was just boring, which is a rather colossal feat considering the genre they were aiming for.

Hmmm....curious...and more curious.:vulcan:

(Reminds me, I'll have to watch the Director's Cut of "Iron Sky" when time permits).

And that's what I mean by niche. You liking Iron Sky already tells me we have different tastes in film. I don't possibly see how this can be at all like Iron Sky in any elements based on the trailers.

Iron Sky was a full on parody, with jokes that appeal to the lowest common denominator. Iron Sky was obvious and contrived for me. It's one of those so bad it's good films, despite the writers/directors best efforts.

My expectations for Space Station 76 are to be more muted than that, with some more intelligent satire.

Wulfio,

I don't know if it was directed to me or Mister Fandango, but I didn't really care for "Iron Sky." Yeah, it was funny in parts...and I found it interesting the hot Nazi blonde fell in love with the black hero, and was going to start a new movement, but the film overall was....chaotic. Not really for me.

Yet, I want to see the the Director's Cut out of curiosity.

Still, it's interesting hearing different points of views on "Space Station 76." ;)

(And yes, I think our tastes may vary. It takes a lot for a film to impress me...or garner my interest).

OH! I finally got it.

The intended broader audience for this, are the people who have not seen science fiction from the 70s since the 70s.

Looks like a Larry Blamire-style parody. I'll probably catch it on On Demand.

Not really directed at anyone, but came about because of the Iron Sky example.

Different views are good. I just don't like blanket statements when talking about subjective things.

Understood.;)

The shuttle in that preview looks like a derivative of the Seeker shuttle from the late 70's childrens' live action show "Space Academy".

Also, why is it when I see this trailer that for some reason, I am thinking "Little Miss Sunshine In Space"?

If they'd crossed it with the likes of 'Love American Style' they could have had a grand campy parody. This just seems like a cheesy 70s film. Stinky, bad cheese at that.
