space shot CGI ship expectations

Maybe this would be better as it's own thread, but one thing I would love to see, or shall I say "not hear," is on the exterior space scenes not having any sound. Have music if you must but I'd love to see a more accurate depiction of space. To me, one of the things that made 2001 such a great movie was just this. ST '09 touched on this a bit and in the directors cut of TWOK Meyer talks about having wanted to do that but being vetoed or outvoted.

I think stories are priority - they need to be great - but there is no substitute for solid CGI. The fans will spot shoddy CGI in a second. Does it need to be 4k UHD? Maybe, given CBS will want future revenue for the series and such resolution might be the minimum in 5 to 7 years time (let's hope for 7 :D).

The technology that is out there now really makes CGI are less difficult concept. So, the idea that they HAVE to emphasis the CGI shots is something that I think is important, but tertiary in my concerns of enjoyment. I could have TOS level effects and, if the characters and stories are good, then I'll enjoy it.

CBS will want to use the new product from it's Star Trek IP: DSC for years to come so 4k UHD mastering is a no-brainer these days since even Breaking Bad was rescanned from 35mm original camera negative to 4k UHD. A TV series shot on film not a movie.
I can see CBSAA adding 4k UHD in 2018 or 2019 and then you can re-watch the first series in 4k UHD.
Of course I also expect CBS Home Video to re-release all the Trek movies in 4k UHD from new 35mm scans of the interpositive or possibly the original camera negative. That same 18 month period will have a DSC 4k UHD Blu-ray of season 1 release I fully expect since it is Trek and would be another product people can buy rather than just digital download.

I need good stories, lots of spaceship sfx, and MOAR SPACE NOISE. I know spaceships shouldn't be handling like jet fighters and space is silent, but I'd find it off-putting if all of the sudden Trek just dropped it.

Anyone ever notice Trek never shows coreward in the Milky Way in space shots? Shouldn't that be visible just as from Earth?

I HEAR where you are coming from. Science, all that. But, I disagree, mostly because of what has come before. Also, I think for entertainment sake, sound is an effective additive.

This did make me think about one of my favorite editing techniques which is the audio from the coming scene to start before the visual changes a la TWOK (Regula arguments) and GEN (Dr. Crusher's voice during the bird of prey scene). Just a second or two. I am shooting off of memory here, so don't nail me to the cross if I am remembering wrong.

I've heard a rumour that the per episode budget of Discovery is roughly in the same ballpark as Game of Thrones, so based on that, and the fact that expensive foreign location shoots are rather unlikely, I'd expect the CG effects to be of almost movie quality, and to show us convincingly exotic alien landscapes, and the parts of the ship that Star Trek on television has never had the budget or the technology to show the audience before.

I understand where you're coming from. But I do think it's effective in conveying the vastness, emptiness of space. One thing I loved about the original series is the sense of isolation you got from it. I think that was lost in the subsequent series. This is one tool I think could help that. When you watch 2001 I think it's such an unbelievable tool to convey the feeling of danger and isolation of space travel. Kubrick was truly a master. Of course, it doesn't mean these scenes all have to be silent, you can overlay music or crew speaking to each other. Anyway, JMO, I'm obviously in the minority here.

Doesn't a modern audience demand a hunky cast, top of the line CGI and lots of action. Trek viewers would require story and characterization.

The ships will look better than we've ever seen them--perhpas not as slick as the recent movies--but up there.

I'm on the same camp as you! :bolian:

We're all wishing for top level writing. What's wrong to also wish for some top level visual f/x to go with it?
If we get it, great. If not, and the story is good, I won't mind as much.

It's maybe in my Top 5 of wishes for the series. Not unimportant, but not the deal breaker either.

After seeing a trailer for Mass Effect: Andromeda videogame (to be released on March 21, 2017 for XBOX One, PS4, and PC) I would want DSC to have exterior space ship and planet visual effects pretty close to this which is almost feature film quality. This level of quality is achievable for a trailer but can they handle it for 13 episodes of season 1?

Are you guys expecting only The Expanse quality of Visual Effects for season 1 of DSC?
