Space Seed

I've just finished watching the 'Space Seed' and its been ages since I last saw it. We all know that the movie 'Wrath of Khan' was a sequel to this particular episode. Generally speaking it is a good episode and well worth watching over and over.

It may have been a good idea if the makers of the movie watched the episode also, then they would not have made a big error.

In the movie Khan says 'I never forget a face' (or something similar) when he looks at Chekov. How could he remember Chekov when he wasn't even in that episode or any of season 1. ( I will go through the whole of that season later to check it out, but I'm pretty sure that is correct).

Either way for a genetic superman like Khan he comes across a little dense remembering a face that wasn't there!

Meh. We didn't see all 430 crewmembers who were on board when Khan was there. We didn't see each and every second of Khan's time on board the Enterprise. Naturally he bumped into many more crewmembers that were shown in the episode.

It's amazing no on else has ever noticed this in the 25 years since the film premiered!

;)

The comics and novels have always assumed that Chekov came on the ship at some point prior to Space Seed but that he was not seen on screen. I believe some stories have him simply assigned to the ship near the beginning of the FYM, others have him coming on board as a very young officer. I think there was even one which assumed he was still finishing out his Academy and was on the ship as an internship and doing academic work. Haven't been reading as much trek lately as normal, so I can't qoute the stories.

Lots of people have noticed (myself included) and have complained about it. We always get the "they met offstage" argument from people who are not so adamant about keeping canon flowing correctly.

In my opinion, Khan should have said something about recognizing Chekov's face from the library reader he was allowed to use after Kirk said he had 200 years worth of catching up to do - after all, even when we did see Chekov on the Bridge, he was hardly high enough in the "food chain" to have been at Khan's "welcome to the 23rd century" dinner party.

Or maybe to pass the time, Marla did sketches of some of her Starfleet acquaintances; Chekov could have been among them. I seem to recall a line in one of the novelizations that Chekov had had a crush on Marla McGivers, and had felt very sad when she chose exile with Khan.

There's a scene in TO REIGN IN HELL (my third Khan novel) where Chekov says goodbye to Marla while Khan is standing by. I threw that in just to explain how Khan remembered Chekov . . . .

"Catspaw", which has Chekov on the Enterprise, gives an earlier stardate than that of "Space Seed".

I always thought they should have mad it Sulu that found Khan, and therefore Khan "never forgot" Sulu's face, since Sulu had been on the show since Where No Man Has Gone Before.

My whole idea was basically fucked over when I realized that Sulu wasn't in Space Seed!

Why do people assume that if a character isn't in an episode they weren't on the ship? Or that their first appearance is the first time the were on the Enterprise. Is there any peice of dialog in "Catspaw" showing Chekov had been assigned to the ship at the start of the episode?

Guess, I'm one of those people who use facial connections. Normaly when references are made to a past event in films or programmes the characters mentioned were or are present. I have to admit that I only went by the episode and film, I have only read one Star Trek book and no comics so unable to make the connections that others have made. Perhaps a bit of reading may help:alienblush:.

If those common assumptions were always true, then we would have to assume that no one in all of Star Trek has ever defecated or urinated, since these activities have never taken place on screen. On the other hand, perhaps the transporter automatically removes unwanted materials from humanoid bodies as people are beamed to and from the ship, in which case one wonders why McCoy is none too fond of the transporter.

What if you aren't beamed anywhere for weeks? What if your balls accidentally got beamed out?

maybe Chekov was in the lower decks during this time frame.

I've always believed that Chekov easily could have been on the ship, just not part of the bridge crew.

When Khan was in Sickbay, and Kirk so graciously gave him access to every bit of data in the frickin ship's computers, Khan could have very easily memorized all the ship's crew, due to his superior genetic engineering, that's why he "never forgot Chekov's face."

I always wondered why, when Chekov figured out they were in Khan's "house", he simply didn't request an immediate beamout instead of going outside and letting himself get captured. Surely the Enterprise's old cargo bays didn't interfere with the transporter.

Lots of plot holes but still one of the best Trek movies. :techman:

Well, there is this story around the interwebs about Chekov working in the lower decks during that episode, and he need to use the head in some corridor, he does his stuff, goes out, Khan goes in, Khan does his stuff too but then he realizes that Chekov finished all the toilet paper, and so the feud began. :techman:
