"Space Command"

75,000 dollars, BTW, is far from the limit of their financial ambitions here. At http://pledgespacecommand.com/ they're soliciting contributions of up to a quarter of a million dollars.

Frankly, the "rewards" they're offering when they get to that hypothetical level of contribution are pretty weak tea. A teeshirt or a prop is a nice "thank you" for a few hundred, but for hundreds of thousands any sane person is going to want a piece of the action.

I get that, but industry experience alone doesn't sell me on contributing to anything. Is the project interesting, AND does it have the right people? That's what I want to see.

It does have the right people, I know a few of them but there are still some gaps. I am not sure i'm sold on the 50's type style though, the retro nature is cool in a lot of ways, but i'm not sure its for everyone. Doug has always been a retro sorta guy. :)

I am also interested in watching how their pledge drive goes. I have seen Kickstarter work for some, but fail for others. It's really all about the product they are pitching. It they could get enough funds to string together a small trailer that would help there cause.

The Buck Rogers Begins Kickstarter failed utterly, for instance.

I don't think they need to shoot a trailer, but I would like to know something about what the show is rather than it merely harkening back to those thrilling Space Patrol days.

That's true. These guys are already doing enormously better with their campaign than BRB did.

Since my post half an hour ago they've moved from about 15 percent to 22 percent funding.

It's a binary effort of course - they reach their goal or they get nothing.

They could be like the Least I Could Do guys and hit all their funding in a day, or they could start strong and it peters out. Let's see!

I think some of that will depend on whether they have more detail to show to continue to draw attention to themselves. Zicree has made his living as a writer for quite a long time, and I can't imagine that they don't have characters, storylines and a bible for this show.

It's certainly gonna be alot better than NuTrek which is not saying much unless you consider the vast discrepancy in the budgets. It still is very hard to pull off the right pacing and approach on any budget to make it not seem too cartoony or Star Warish, etc. and make it feel really believable. Certainly Andromeda didn't pull it off in any way. The ship and sfx were ludicrous as was TNG's even. It's a balancing act of knowing what not to do or do too much of. Treating aliens and space more carefully and with more respect is a good way to start.

Fantastic. This is what I've been saying for ages. Fan films have shown that quality movies can be made on a budget; you can make a great movie for 100k and a quarter of a billion dollars won't make a movie good. I hope these guys can pull this off and I will definitely contribute to their efforts.

There's too many of them to keep track of. I just saw someone's avatar said 'Star Force' and the director's titles sound cool - I'll have to look them up. So this is technically an original property which gives them all that much more authority and control which is always best. 'Star Command' is sounding better to me though and just rolls off the toungue better. Space Command sounds like 'Space Cases' or Trek's Space central and makes me think Batman's in it. Oh, well, It's all in the execution.

It's a smart platform in any case. I hope this is the beginning of many such projects popping up here and there gaining national recognition and making the big leap back into the big ponds. Doesn't Netflix and/or Amazon sponser pilots like this or run contests for such properties to be made by them? but I guess you would have to sign over your life to them and make pennies on the dollar.

I pledged last night. The visuals combined with the talent involved intrigued me enough to throw some money their way.

I'd really like to see what these guys come up with.

None as such.

  1. Who is responsible for fulfilling the promises of a project?

It is the responsibility of the project creator to fulfill the promises of their project. Kickstarter reviews projects to ensure they do not violate the Project Guidelines, however Kickstarter does not investigate a creator's ability to complete their project.
Creators are encouraged to share links to any websites that show work related to the project, or past projects. It's up to them to make the case for their project and their ability to complete it. Because projects are usually funded by the friends, fans, and communities around its creator, there are powerful social forces that keep creators accountable.
The web is an excellent resource for learning about someone’s prior experience. If someone has no demonstrable prior history of doing something like their project, or is unwilling to share information, backers should consider that when weighing a pledge. If something sounds too good to be true, it very well may be.
Projects: Fundraising and Commerce

Kickstarter is a platform where Project Creators run campaigns to fund creative projects by offering rewards to raise money from Backers. By backing or creating a fundraising campaign, you agree to be bound by this entire Agreement, including the following terms:

  • Backers agree to provide their payment information at the time they pledge to a campaign. The payment will be collected at or after the campaign deadline and only if the amount of money pledged as of the deadline is at least equal to the fundraising goal. The amount Backers pledge is the amount they will be charged.
  • Backers consent to Kickstarter and its payments partners authorizing or reserving a charge on their payment card or other payment method for any amount up to the full pledge at any time between the pledge and collection of the funds.
  • Backers agree to have sufficient funds or credit available at the campaign deadline to ensure that the pledge will be collectible.
  • Backers may increase, decrease, or cancel their pledge at any time during the fundraising campaign, except that they may not cancel or reduce their pledge if the campaign is in its final 24 hours and the cancellation or reduction would drop the campaign below its goal.
  • The Estimated Delivery Date listed on each reward is not a promise to fulfill by that date, but is merely an estimate of when the Project Creator hopes to fulfill by.
  • Project Creators agree to make a good faith attempt to fulfill each reward by its Estimated Delivery Date.
  • For all campaigns, Kickstarter gives to the Project Creator each Backer’s User ID and pledge amount. For successful campaigns, Kickstarter additionally gives to the Project Creator each Backer’s name and email.
  • For some rewards, the Project Creator needs further information from Backers, such as a mailing address or t-shirt size, to enable the Project Creator to deliver the rewards. The Project Creator shall request the information at some point after the fundraising campaign is successful. To receive the reward, Backers agree to provide the requested information to the Project Creator.
  • Kickstarter does not offer refunds. A Project Creator is not required to grant a Backer’s request for a refund unless the Project Creator is unable or unwilling to fulfill the reward.
  • Project Creators are required to fulfill all rewards of their successful fundraising campaigns or refund any Backer whose reward they do not or cannot fulfill.
  • Project Creators may cancel or refund a Backer’s pledge at any time and for any reason, and if they do so, are not required to fulfill the reward.
  • Project Creators should not take any action in reliance on having the money pledged until they have the ability to withdraw and spend the money.
  • Because of occasional failures of payments from Backers, Kickstarter cannot guarantee the full receipt of the amount pledged minus fees.
  • Kickstarter and its payments partners will remove their fees before transmitting proceeds of a campaign. Fees may vary depending on region and other factors.
  • Kickstarter reserves the right to cancel a pledge at any time and for any reason.
  • Kickstarter reserves the right to reject, cancel, interrupt, remove, or suspend a campaign at any time and for any reason. Kickstarter is not liable for any damages as a result of any of those actions. Kickstarter’s policy is not to comment on the reasons for any of those actions.
Kickstarter is not liable for any damages or loss incurred related to rewards or any other use of the Service. All dealings are solely between Users. Kickstarter is under no obligation to become involved in disputes between any Users, or between Users and any third party. This includes, but is not limited to, delivery of goods and services, and any other terms, conditions, warranties, or representations associated with campaigns on the Site.
