Space Battleship Yamato 2202

This is the Apollo Norm doing fighter operations.

48 tubes launching at least 3 fighters each in the span of 15 seconds. She carries 180 fighters total. These are all the older Cosmo Falcons like Yamato operated in Yamato 2199, rather than the newer Cosmo Tiger II which seem to be on Andromeda herself and now on Yamato as well.

Not a yet, no. Might as well be, but the Japanese decide to keep all the Andromeda-class as the A-class ships (Andromeda, Aldebaran, Achilles, Antares, and Apollo Norm) The last two being the carriers. The 14 Dreadnought-class ships seen with the fleet are all named after ships that start with the letter "D". Mostly British ships from around 1890 - 1940. The Earth's D-class battleships. And you can read the names on the ships hulls in the episode, it is just easier to show the decal sheet of the 1/1000 scale model kit for all the names.

Heh...Guess we haven't gotten to any of the "G" ships yet, then. Maybe we'll see a reboot of the Bolar Wars and a new Galactica-class supercarrier will make an appearance. Although they'll probably wind up calling it the Shinano to be more historically traditional.

Shinano would be the BBY-03 converted to a carrier. We did see Musashi in one of the films, and the artists that is doing all the Earth stuff did a version of Shinano to go with that production's Musashi and Yamato.

Has anyone heard if there's been any rumors on English subs for the episodes yet? Pretty much the only reason I've been holding back buying any of the discs yet.
And here I thought this was the Apollo Norm ;)

Jiminy Crickets! How do they get a fat bastard like that to float?!?

Since it seems Voyager Entertainment was involved in Bandi's decision NOT to do them for the Japanese language Blu-Rays my guess is between "The Rapture" and when Hell freezes over :(

There is a rumor that a fansub in English for Chapter Two in three weeks. Probably after a group translates the Italian scrip into English.

Hmm - a 2nd-gen translation? Hope it actually makes sense for the story and not some "All Your Base" silliness.

Well that's where the fansubs for Chapter One came from I think. Though there are two or three of that, with the first one being based off a Russian script, so some of the proper names are the Russian based versions rather than the Japanese or English versions. The other one or two were based on the Italian subs, but I've not seen those as I have a jist of it already and have the BD presently (no subtitles on the discs as of yet).

All Your Base silliness tends to be when translators go too literal or the language thrice translated doesn't function well with each other. I've seen some anime that was first translated into Chinese and then English out of either Hong Kong or Singapore, and sometimes that gets really weird because the English pronouns are completely foreign to Chinese and Japanese, and if tends to come out very, very wrong. That and place names and some other proper nouns get translated into what they proper noun means, rather than just leaving it alone. This gets you planet names that translating into "We are now landing on Science Center" or "He is the queen of the galaxy" When the name of the planet was Technologia or something. Or a name gets translated into Ancient Older for no reason other than the program is just translating without context. The worst was one where the ending song was actually sung in English, with Japanese subtitles below for the original Japanese audience...which was then translated into Chinese, and then back into English....and the words do not match what she was singing. It gets the same meaning across, but the word choices were totally off.

But fansub groups tend to at least marginally know the language and style of these sorts of shows, and because there are so few around anymore due to streaming services, the once that would pick up Yamato probably know the universe already and can at least get the proper noun translations close to the generally accepted standards. Especially since they can reference the Yamato 2199 episodes for official translations of names and such.

Bit OT but there's no other relevant thread.

Anyway was recently watching S2 of Star Blazers (never actually saw all the eps when it originally aired in Australian in the early 80s).

After seeing the carrier battle ep (when the Argo returns to our solar system) and wondered if it was reference to the Battle of Midway given the some similarities (enemy vessels caught by surprise with the loaded bombers on the deck) or was it meant to be a more generic bad guys get blown to hell?

It was basically the Battle of Midway in terms of tactics used. Followed up by what the Japanese had hoped would have happened at the Battle of Samar, since the Cometine carrier fleet didn't appear to have escorts.

The big question for Yamato 2202 is, will they still have those battles, just redone, near the end of the series?

I broke down and just saw Chapters 1 and 2 subbed (and the sub seemed good too) @720P resolution (as the policy here is not to post links to unauthorized stuff - I won't do that - but Google works ;)) - and I just have to say:

F**k Bandi and Voyager Ent. for NOT giving fans in the U.S. an authorized legal source to obtain an English subbed copy. The whole Galantis/Comet Empire story line is my favorite; and this new retelling is wonderful so far in how it's keeping the same plot and basic story, BUT also improving it greatly (and yes, I know, it's only two episodes in - but yeah IMO it's GREAT.)

If I had a legal source to pay for legitimate subs/dubs for Blu-Rays of this, they'd have my money in an instant.

It was.

At least the Yamato 2202 Earth fleet has a reasonable change of doing a lot of damage to the enemy forces before getting inevitably destroyed.

Some miniatures. Four of the older battleship miniatures for what is now called the Dreadnoughts have been painted correctly for Yamato 2202, and two of the old Andromeda miniatures have been modified to look close to the Apollo Norm type battlecarrier. These are all Musashi Enterprises' miniatures from around 1998, except for the center Andromeda in front of Yamato. That is a Megahouse toy from the 2000s. (The hexes are three inches across).
