Space Solar Power discussed on this podcast
https://veriten.com/stream/otherwis...ecisions-featuring-joseph-sigelman-agp-group/

Colin Fenton flagged a notable public disclosure from a just-completed secret space mission. This past weekend, the U.S. X37B spaceplane landed after a record 908 days in orbit. While aloft, it conducted experiments for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, in which unimpeded solar energy was collected in space, converted into microwaves, and transmitted to ground receivers.

China takes the lead
https://spacenews.com/chinas-super-heavy-rocket-to-construct-space-based-solar-power-station/
Commercial, gigawatt-level power generation would be realized by 2050. This would require more than 100 Long March 9 launches and around 10,000 tons of infrastructure, assembled in orbit. The complex project calls for a solar energy collection system with an area on the order of square kilometers and a large microwave power transmission sub-system.

China to build ONE KILOMETER LONG SPACE PLATFORM
https://spacenews.com/china-researching-challenges-of-kilometer-scale-ultra-large-spacecraft/

Lest any scoff:

This is much more hardware-intensive than the O'Neil studies. They have been building a multi-billion dollar research and testing complex in Chongqing for large scale space construction (for space based solar power) since 2015, IIRC phase 1 of the facility is nearing completion.

Green breakthrough?
https://phys.org/news/2021-10-chemists-fundamentally-mode-adsorption.html

The new adsorption mechanism, called mechanisorption, results from non-equilibrium pumping to form mechanical bonds between the adsorbent (the surface) and the adsorbate (the molecules)...."If chemists can work out how mechanisorption can be incorporated in active structures, the storage of gases like hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane will enter a whole new world and become a different ball game altogether."

https://phys.org/news/2021-10-nanoscale-gas-liquid-interface-fabricated.html
Researchers based at Osaka Prefecture University have developed the first controllable gas-liquid interface at the nanoscale. They published their design and experimental results on October 14 in Nano Letters.

A breakthrough that might help with wireless?
https://techxplore.com/news/2021-10-wireless-based-large-area-electronics-gigahertz.html

Large-area electronics (LAE) is an emerging technology for electronic device manufacture, such as printing or large-scale lithography, the process used to create flat panel displays and solar cells. Using LAE processes, engineers could create systems that are large (several square meters squared) and highly flexible; for instance, based on paper or plastic.

Mankins of Artemis Innovation Management Solutions has rolled out SPS-ALPHA ("Solar Power Satellite by means of Arbitrarily Large Phased Array"), a design he showcased at the 72nd International Astronautical Congress, which was held from Oct. 25 to Oct. 29 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Detailing a business model and step-by-step SSP roadmap, he feels the concept promises a clear, affordable path to deploying a critically needed new energy option.

"I believe you could have operational solar power satellites to scale within a decade," Mankins said.
