Southern accents in movies

Twain wasn't Southern, was he? He was born and raised in Missouri, and spent much of his life in Nevada, California, New York, Connecticut, and elsewhere. Missouri was considered part of the slave-owning South in the 19th century, but it's more Midwestern, really, isn't it?

Well as I mentioned in my previous post, MO has accents of it's own, often referred to as an "ozark twang." Not sure if that's what the actor was going for or not, but it was NOT a southern accent.

Hmmm, I wasn't sure about if Twain's accent was Southern, but he certainly seemed like a Southern caricature in that TNG episode, whether that's accurate to his real background or not. He reminded me of the KFC Colonel! I just remembered, another Southern accent I liked was Sam Elliot in "The Big Lebowski". Again, not sure how accurate it was, but it was endearing. :)

Some good ones:

*Michael Moriarty in 'Pale Rider.'

*Slim Pickens in 'Dr. Strangelove.'
Slim Pickens’ Texas-Oklahoma drawl was real, even though he was born in California. He picked up the accent from his 20 years as a professional rodeo performer, and talked that way all his adult life.

Depends on which part. There's Missouri, the there's Missoura.
