Soon-To-Be GF wants to watch Trek with me...Where to start?

KaineMorrison

Lieutenant Commander
So, my soon-to-be GirlFriend wants to watch Star Trek with me.
She wants to because it is one of my interests.
Where should I start? Kirk or Picard?
I don't know if she'll like The Original Series, at least until she knows more about it.
I refuse to, even though I own the, subjugate my senses to the JJVerse again.
or as I call him: Jar Jar Abrams
:guffaw:
What are your opinions?

If you want her to like you, don't watch Star Trek with her at all. Just keep your fandom as a dirty little secret.

Seriously, depending on her age, she may like the Abrams films.

I started with TNG, so maybe you could do that? Ask her what she would like to see, between TOS or TNG. TNG is, IMO, a better way to get people into the franchise. It's more familiar and overall less cheesy (lack of a better term) than TOS was.

However, TNG Seasons 1-2 are very slow starts but be sure to tell her that she'll like it after Season 3.

...my soon-to-be GirlFriend...

If she knows you like Star Trek, don't count on it.

Hey, Kaine...Bill and Brett might be right, but if you are going to go where no man, and so forth, stick with the humorous TNG and strong Janeway VOY...avoid Neelix (seems to me he has been killed off many times in another Thread, anyway) and under NO circumstances show her even one frame of Wesley...

...check out the "Favourite Comedy Scene" thread for suggestions on the TNG...IMHO, wait on TOS until after you get the "Dear Kaine" letter... sorry, man, just kidding...I am sure she will love it!

I would either start at the beginning with "The Cage" or allow her to do a bit of research and pick where she wants to start.

I know she loves Horror movies. I can't recall if TNG ever did a "horror" Episode.
I know The Naked Now is a comedy, I love that Episode.

There's some dark DS9 stuff, and there's also that episode in TNG where Riker's in some mental institution.

Schisms was suitably creepy. Indeed, Brannon Braga wrote a few episodes for three of the series that had a Twilight Zone darkness to them, if not being outright horror.

Potential DS9 episodes would be Empok Nor, The Darkness and the Light, and Field of Fire, although I'd recommend Hard Time, which is more of a psychological portrait.

I really really hope that DS9 gets the Blu-Ray remaster! I never gave it a chance when it aired. I will totally buy each Season on Day 1 just like I am with TNG.

The Original Series is absolutely much sexier. I never felt any of the spinoffs had the sex appeal or even gravure tones of TOS.
Just my two bits... if you want to set a mood.

It's the Skirts. ALthough the Next Gen episode "Justice" was very sexy... so many barely clothed women...

Here's what you do:

Show her the episode of Star Trek that got you into the whole thing. This will prompt discussion and further potential viewing. Let her see what got you so interested in the first place.

If she likes horror movies, you could try some of the more "monster"-oriented episodes of TOS: "Mantrap," "Devil in the Dark," "Arena," "What are Little Girls Made Of?"

If you think TOS's age will turn her off, try TNG, but--for God's sake--skip the first season or so and go straight to one of the good episodes, like "Measure of a Man." Neither TOS or TNG are all that serialized, so she won't really be missing anything.

Or you could start her off with some of the more popular movies: "Wrath of Khan" or "The Voyage Home" maybe. Or "First Contact" since that one feels the most like a horror movie, what with the Borg being space zombies and all. Just tell her it's Star Trek meets The Walking Dead . . . .

Not sure if this is helpful, but here are some "don't"s for you:

1. Don't overthink it. Just find an episode that you think best exemplifies what Trek has to offer and start there. If it's a little out of context, just use that as an opportunity to spur discussion and further viewing.

2. Don't be surprised/upset/concerned if the first episode you show her girlfriend doesn't wow her. If she's interested enough to let you know she wants to watch, she may be willing to put up with a so-so episode or two at first.

3. Don't force her to like it. Give her the chance to enjoy it on her terms. If you force it, you'll just make her not want to watch any more Trek.

I don't mean for this post to be so negative, but I think you can avoid some major pitfalls if you put these things into consideration.
