Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

Looks like they're turning my favourite version of Spider-Man into the bad guy. Not sure how I feel about that, but the trailer could be misleading.

Soooo many beautiful little touches throughout the trailer:

Rio snapping her fingers with Puerto Rico flag colors.

BLM pin on Miles' backpack.

"Protect Trans Kids" flag above a doorway in Gwen's apartment.

Direct reference to No Way Home.

Garfield Spider-Man hanging upright from ceiling pose.

Mayday!

Spider-Horse?!?

And, of course, the iconic meme.

Spot is the primary villain but Miguel does appear to be an antagonist regarding how to deal with Spot. I agree the level of aggressiveness he displays is worrying but hopefully, as you said, the trailer is misleading.

I don’t get the impression that he’s a villain, he’s trying to protect the multiverse. He’s misguided at worst.
The impression I got is that he is misguided and that's a sword he's willing to have Miles die on. Which is a step too far and puts him into villain with good intentions range.

International trailer, not much different, has different beginning

Can you not describe most complex villains this very way?

Though I agree, I don't think I'd put him in "villain" territory, but he's (seemingly) too far into antagonist territory for one of my favourite heroes.

I saw that on Twitter yesterday but then forgot to look for a YouTube link to post here. I love that new opener with clips from Tobey, Andrew, and Tom. :D

Protagonists disagreeing on the correct resolution? In a MARVEL movie?! This is GAME CHANGING!!!

With this character to this extent, it is to me.

Edited to add, it doesn't help that the "hero" in question is being so dangerously aggressive to a kid.

This looks pretty great, although I do agree that Spider-Man 2099 having such an antagonistic role is a bit of a shock. But this already feels like the kind of story where he starts out working against Miles, but by the end realizes his mistake and they team up.

You mean like 90% of superhero crossover stories ever, right?

(Well, at least in America. In Japanese tokusatsu, when heroes from different series meet, it's usually more like "So you're a Kamen Rider/Ultraman too? Great, let's team up!" Which is kind of refreshing.)

Pretty much, yeah. I just meant that I don't really see where it's worth getting to upset by how Miguel is being portrayed in the trailer, since his conflict with Miles probably won't last that long before he realizes the error of his ways and they team up to fight Spot or the Inheritors, or whoever else the final Big Bad ends up being.
