Sony/Marvel working on new Spider-man deal. Andrew Garfield out?

In the follow up email, De Luca explained to Pascal all of the options their Spider-Man franchise had in front of them at that time. He brings up the previously-confirmed deal Marvel Studios offered Sony, which would allow Spider-Man to join the Marvel cinematic universe. To be more specific, Spider-Man would make a cameo in Captain America: Civil War. If the deal was agreed upon, De Luca reports that Marvel would introduce A BRAND NEW SPIDER-MAN. See you later, Andrew Garfield. De Luca seems gung-ho about the cameo. He thinks it could spark new interest in Spidey. Fans would look forward to Spidey's next film without Sony having to make a Sinister Six film just to put fannies in the seats. Either way, De Luca would be happy with whatever direction Marvel president Kevin Feige chose for the Webhead.

That's all based on the deal with Marvel actually happening, but as of right now we know it hasn't, and De Luca addressed that grim possibility as well. Wisely, De Luca proposed another Spider-Man reboot, but this time, it won't spend a lot of its time on Spidey's origin or his parents like The Amazing Spider-Man films did. De Luca also thinks Venom, Carnage and Hobgoblin would be nice additions to a reboot. He especially likes Ultimate Venom because his suit isn't formed from an alien symbiote. He'd like to explore the modern Spider-Man comic book stories written by Michael Bendis, Michael Strascynski and Brain K. Vaughn.

Are they serious?

The guy is deeply passionate about the role. To sack him for ANOTHER Spider-man actor would be disastrous.

It would make Marvel the bad guy
 
Technically it would be SONY firing Andrew Garfield since they were the ones to hire him in the first place. :p
 
Fine by me. I'd prefer a similar deal with Fox for the Fantastic 4, but this is a step in the right direction. Seems few are happy with the recent Spider-Men anyway (though honestly I think Garfield is pretty much perfect, even if the movies aren't great).
 
I think Garfield isn't suited to the role. I felt the amazing Spider-man movies suck and I have little interest in a Sinister Six movie.
 
It would be a shame, as Garfield and Stone were literally the only two good things in those Amazing Spider-Man movies.

If they put out a YouTube video of Andrew Garfield going to sleep, Scooby Doo ending wavy doodooloodoo effect, waking up with a red haired Emma Stone as Mary Jane and seeing Iron Man fly by I'd be totally cool with that, because having Spider-Man join that universe is more important than anything else, and I liked those two.

After all, look at what Days of Future Past did to X-Men 3. Sony are so boned right now the only positive thing they can do is let Spider-Man into the MCU. Everything else in their future game plan has either been leaked or is going to be leaked - in that position, your only move is to shake up the plan.
 
Andrew can audition to be Spider-Man again.

There's nothing stopping him doing that.

Former Superboy actor Gerard Christopher, auditioned for the role of Superman in Lois and Clark the New Adventures of Superman. They offered him the part on the spot, saying that he was perfect and it was as if he had been playing the part for the last three years, to which he replied "But I have been playing the part for the last three years!" Unfortunately the producer who discovered this factoid didn't want a second hand Superman, rescinded their offer and moved his eye along to the next bloke in line.
 
Garfield is great as Spidey, much better than Tobey Maguire. And whatever ASM2's faults in its plotline and its villains, it was the most note-perfect screen portrayal of Spider-Man as a character that we've ever had in live action. They should keep this continuity going, just improve the scripts.
 
If this doesn't happen, I'm fine with it. My personal take includes the Raimi movies in the MCU. That first movie just fits in so well between the two Iron Man films, what with the companies building power armor and the 3rd party super-soldier serum.
 
Garfield might have gone down as the definitive Spider-man if only he had had decent scripts to work with. As it stands now, I wouldn't have any problems with Sony/Marvel disregarding the current continuity and starting over.
 
It would be too bad if Garfield were to be replaced. I think he made a more spot on Spider-Man than Macguire. But even if nothing were to change and Sony went ahead with TASM3 being that it's scheduled for release in 2018, Garfield may be too old then to play the role. At best it would be the last time he would play Spider-Man.
 
Twice a year on SNL they'd give him a 5 minute skit.

I think Garfield is perfect for the role. Wouldn't mind seeing the Miles Morales character though. They're already using the Ultimate version of Fury.
 
I hope this happens. Garfield is such a bad Spider-Man its ridiculous. His reaction to Uncle Ben's death in ASM1 is some of the worst acting I've seen in a big budget superhero movie. It was hilarious how badly he did, and he was wooden the rest of the movie as well. I'd love to see a new Spidey, and this one connected to the MCU.

Yeah, ASM2 was a mess, but unlike X:TLS, it didn't blow up the internal story beyond repair. Heck, given the way ASM2 ended, with Spidey back in business, an ASM3 a few years down the road could easily feel like a soft reboot itself, depending on how much they go with this whole Sinister People thing. There's no doubt, though that Sony's in a very tricky place: lean too hard on the whole evil team thing, and they run the risk of looking like a Suicide Squad ripoff; do another straightforward Spidey movie and they bet against a growing franchise fatigue. (Maybe they wish they could do a smaller-budget, more offbeat Peter-and-Gwen-in-Oxford movie now?! :p)

That said, though, this new Flash show has got me thinking about whether Spidey's ideal home would be TV. Lots of people who, unlike me, actually know about comics have said that Grant Gustin's Barry Allen is a lot closer to Peter Parker than older generations' Barry Allen, and if you think about it, Spider-Man 2 kinda feels more like a two-parter season finale than a movie in its own right. Obviously, budget concerns alone would make a live-action Spidey show pretty much impossible, but it's an interesting thought regardless.

I see why Sony declined Marvel's request earlier. TASM2 had problems but they are not unsolvable. I doubt Sony is going to fire Garfield AND give a significant degree of creative control to Marvel Studios all for a cameo in a Captain America film.

Sony is having some big Spidey Event in January, where they plan on detailing their plans for the franchise. I'll wait till then to see what Sony plans to do.

According to this report, Sony may have already fired Garfield...

Moreover, it appears that Garfield may be out as Spider-man altogether. Garfield has been praised for his performance as Peter Parker, but his critical remarks that seemed to blame the studio for Amazing Spider-man 2's tepid box office and critical reception may have annoyed the wrong people.

Garfield also stood up Sony at a corporate dinner in July. Garfield's attendance was going to be mentioned by Sony CEO Kaz Hirai and he was supposed to sit with some top Sony executives. His absence (with less than an hour of notice) was seen as an affront and slight by the company's Tokyo bosses.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 made 92 million in its opening weekend and since then has made 202 million lifetime gross... We know it's shit, but most people go to the movies because they are sad, or they have four kids and a spouse that hates them, or they work 80 hours some place shit, and they just need something else colourful to turn their brain off with now that they are in AA.

This is how Transformers has made billions.

Escapism is real.

Real life is so horrible for most people that even bad movies are a good idea.
