Songs You Never Want to Hear Again

Afternoon Delight...

I worked a job where someone else always had the radio tuned to a station that played this song every two hours. The work was in a clean room with a lot of chemicals. Every time the song would come on I would wonder what it would be like to breathe in some of the cyanide dust we used to mix a bath for our 2nd stage resistor production.

It seems like every movie in the last 10 years that was remotely connected to the 1970's used that song in it.

That's as maybe, but on the other hand it does contain the line "Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ignite" :guffaw:

Once you hear it, it can't be un-heard!

The Starland Vocal Band actually hosted their own variety TV show. I think it lasted fewer weeks than that song was on the charts.

The original version of "California Dreamin'". God, I hate that song. The Mamas and the Papas shouldn't have even tried.

The Beach Boys' version is SO MUCH BETTER. I love their version. The reasons why they totally ruled over the original are many:

- The Beach Boys are simply better singers than the Mamas/Papas ever were

- The backbeat is fuller...the bass and drums are more pronounced. Most 60's songs, you can hardly hear the drums, and the bass is always mixed way too low. Not so with the Beach Boys version (which dates from about 1985 I think).

- Unlike the original, the solos in the Beach Boys version are actually IN TUNE. The Beach Boys version has an awesome 12-string guitar solo (by Roger McGuinn, of the Byrds) and a great sax solo. What does the original have? A lameass flute that's way the hell out of tune.

Don't believe me? Hear the awesomeness for yourself:

I completely disagree -- the Mamas & the Papas did a way better job. The Beach Boys was like a crummy '80's pop version -- that was a good '8-'s pop.

Anyone remember the musical Chess? And specifically, Murray Head (brother of Anthony Stewart Head, AFAIK) had that monster pop hit "One Night In Bangkok". I love that song, but God only knows what possessed the chick from the Friday the 13th TV series to try and remake it.

Agree 100 percent. The Mamas and the Papas' original is a CLASSIC. It's wistful and melancholy. The Beach Boys' version has too much of everything -- too much bass, too loud drum track, and what's with the echoing vocals? It's overproduced.

YMMV.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. The original recording perfectly captures the wistful, slightly bittersweet nature of the lyrics, and it's straightforward and honest. The Beach Boys version is way too slick and overproduced, and just reminds me of how great a band they were 20 years before recording it. And the sax solo (as they tend to be) is terrifyingly cheesy.

That reminds me--I need to buy a new iPod Nano. 4GB just isn't cutting it any more.

I still just use a 1GB shuffle. I load (and reload) several times a week. Gonna load lots of Radiohead onto it now, as that is what I feel like listening too.

Also another person I never want to hear is Cliff Richard. I heard him on a promo for a program before Doctor Who last night on ABC. Still gonna watch the program.

Wow. My hat is off to you. I'm much too lazy to reload several times a week.

I want my whole CD collection on my iPod, damn it!

I need to buy 64G touch to fit all of my collection, as currently there are 340 CDs in my collection. But there are other things are more important at the moment.
