Something they could've done in First Contact

Berman and company were still in their we-don't-want-to-do-anything-having-TOS-in-it phase back then. It's of little surprise (but telling of their regard for TOS in those days) that they cast James Cromwell as Cochrane for the movie, since Cromwell looked absolutely nothing like Glenn Corbett in "Metamorphosis".

Since it was, IIRC, established that the Companion rejuvenated Cochrane to his youthful vitality, that shouldn't really be a surprise. Cochrane in ST:FC was an old drunk; plenty of time for him to meet the Companion and become young again.

I think it would've been funny if the date of first contact had been September 8, 2066.

I don't get it.

Why would they or any professional, cast a look-a-like for Corbett in the first place? Tom Hanks was the original choice for the role.

I don't know. Casting James Cromwell as "Zefram Cochrane" as opposed to "Maxwell Randolph" or some other original name shows a little bit of fidelity to the original series.

I've been wondering who got the dirty look when they suggested they get Glenn Corbett to reprise the role, only to be told he had been dead for some years by then.

Brannon Braga has said that he was initially so unfamiliar with TOS that when he first heard the name "Zefram Cochrane", he thought it should be Picard's love interest for the movie.

Tom Hanks wanted to play Cochrane, but he had a scheduling conflict with That Thing You Do! and had to drop out. Very reluctantly, as Hanks is a huge Trekkie.

It's a shame that Hanks couldn't do it. That could've given First Contact a real crossover appeal that the films hadn't had since The Voyage Home. I bet the TNG crew could've gone on to a couple of more movies than they did just based on the box office momentum that would've given them.

But I love That Thing You Do! more than anything, so I'd say it all worked out for the best.

I would have loved to have seen Tom Hanks in the role. I'm not really a big fan of James Cromwell.
