Something New to Keep Me Busy

Is it inspired by the Star Wars Radiant VII?

This ship is based on a design I originally did for a Star Trek role playing game 11 or 12 years ago, which was very loosely based on a one-view schematic of a ship in the Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology published back around 1980. I wouldn't totally rule out some generic Star Wars influence but there was no direct connection, no.

I was thinking it looked like what you'd get if a Jawa sandcrawler crossed with a Starfleet ship...

You wouldn't happen to recall which ship from the Spaceflight Chronology, would you?

My copy of the Spaceflight Chronology died a horrible death in a basement flood a few years back so I can't go back and look it up directly. The name Sawyer-class comes to mind but that may be totally wrong. I remember it was only shown in plan view and I had to extrapolate quite a bit.

The Sawyer was essentially a wedge between two massive, NCC-1701-like nacelles twice the length of that wedge. It was far from clear which way was pointing forward...

I'm not sure what SFC ship would look the most like your 'Soapy'. Its angular bow has something in common with the old Marshall destroyer, while the side view looks a bit like the Mercury or Doppler scout... It's just too bad that there are no good online sources for the SFC pictures.

Make that "weren't any":

The Sawyer is on the same page as the Connie:

There's also the Vintage Starships site, which has an SFC-based collection:

And as Vektor said, he wasn't trying to do the Sawyer specifically, it was something inspired/suggested by it. I was just curious.

Thanks to EmperorKalan, I can confirm that the Sawyer was definitely the original inspiration. I'm actually surprised I remembered the name; the RPG we used it in was at least ten years ago. If you look at the sketch I did of the Smith and try to imagine what it would look like in plan view, I think you’ll see some similarities, though the Smith is a considerably smaller, chubbier and less snub-nosed derivation of it.

Hey, EmperorKalan, what's the story behind your sig? I'm curious because I happen to be running a Serenity RPG right now with a ship named the Beowulf.

It's the classic ad copy for the grandaddy of all science fiction RPG's, Traveller.

When Steve Jackson Games came out with GURPS Traveller, they re-created it as cover copy:

You might want to dig up some old Traveller stuff (or the reprints-on-CD that are now available) for your own game. Serenity has a lot of "Traveller-esque" elements. A small group on a small interstellar freighter, occasioanlly skirting the law with odd jobs to keep their heads above water, that sort of thing. Sound familiar?

Did I mention: lots of small starships just begging for 3-D Modelling? Complete with deck plans! (Heck, FASA got its start making stuff for Traveller under license.)

Oh good grief. Now that's irony for you; I make one post where I'm tickled over having remembered something obscure from a ten-year-old role playing game, followed by a post where I don't even recognize the ad copy for frickin' Traveller!

I'm just gonna go away and hang my head in shame now.
