something i noticed when tv channels show Star Trek II Wrath of Khan

Fun fact that some of you probably already know.....

that scene was originally shot with the actors speaking English. In post production they decided they should be speaking in Vulcan -- so they looped it into "Vulcan".
In the UCLA workprint they are, in fact, speaking English and I have that recording saved. I just listened to it.
Also in the script they actually have quite a long exchange about how Saavik must learn to tolerate humans. That exchange was not in the workprint and I don't know it they longer exchange was ever actually shot -- I'd guess not.

Also the first DVD that came out on June 21, 2000 (prior to the 2002-03 timeframe claimed) is still on sale at amazon for $10. I bought that one hoping it included the "ABC TV" scenes -- but alas it didn't.
It wasn't until Aug of 2002 that the Director's Cut finally came out in an official release.
from wikipedia

In August 2002, the film was re-released in a highly anticipated[94] two-disc "Director's Edition" format.[95] In addition to remastered picture quality and 5.1 Dolby surround sound, the DVD set included director commentary, cast interviews, storyboards and the theatrical trailer.[96] The expanded cut of the film was given a Hollywood premiere before the release of the DVD. Meyer stated that he didn't believe directors' cuts of films were necessarily better than the original but that the re-release gave him a chance to add elements that had been removed from the theatrical release by Paramount.[97] The four hours of bonus content and expanded director's cut were favorably received.[96][98][99][100]

Yeah Tallguy, they sure did it that way! Starting in Jan 1999, they released 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 single disc and then did the 2-disc ST:TMP director's cut in 2001 as 2-disc and followed back up to 6 as 2-disc sets. This caused ST:TMP to not have the theatrical cut on DVD or Blu-ray for nearly a decade after.

the 2002 2 disc DVD set of Star Trek II Wrath of Khan was a huge big deal at the time since it was brand new with an extended version that was not in the original theatrical version. its even listed on IMDB's alternate footage for Star Trek II.

i was right the entire time anyway since ive had the 2 disc DVD deluxe edition since i bought it back in 2002 or 2003.

In August 6, 2002, the Director's Edition was released on DVD, which features three minutes of footage not in the theatrical release: (The Director's Edition does not use the ABC-TV version of Kirk and Saavik's conversation in the turbolift, which was more steamy and used close-ups (instead of one long master shot). Also, unlike the ABC-TV version, all Ceti eel scenes are not edited for content.
  • Expanded conversation between Kirk and McCoy in Kirk's apartment about his birthday gift, the glasses. Also, McCoy now says "For most patients your age, I'd usually administer Retinax Five." This is an alternate take, since in the theatrical version, he says "recommend" instead of "administer" (Seen in ABC-TV version).
  • Conversation between Kirk and Midshipman Preston in the Enterprise's engine room, with Scotty revealing that Preston is his nephew. Also, the take at the scene's ending with Kirk addressing Scotty and McCoy asking "Admiral, what about the rest of the inspection?" is different from the one seen in the theatrical version. Kirk's dialogue is also slightly different (Seen in ABC-TV version).

It is in the novelization.

I'd love to hear the English. That's kind of amazing. Compare it to when they looped in Vulcan in TMP and they made it sound much closer to mish mashed English. With TWOK I would never have guessed.

Well, the theatrical cut was the only version released on Blu Ray until 2022. I don't believe the theatrical cut has EVER been released on DVD, has it?

Are you trolling? You said they added the scene with Saavik and Spock. We all assured you (correctly) that there has never been any cut or release of the film without it.

No one said there was never an expanded release. They were telling you that the scene in question was not one of the additions.

Yes. Correct.

...and where is the mention of the scene you keep claiming was only added in 2002?

Well, the theatrical cut was the only version released on Blu Ray until 2022. I don't believe the theatrical cut has EVER been released on DVD, has it?
Well the Directors cut DVD was released in late 2001 on DVD and the first ST:TMP Blu-ray (the Theatrical) was released in 2009 -- so it was for 8 years it was the only version of TMP on 5-inch disc.

As for whether the Theatrical cut of TMP has ever appeared on DVD....Blu-ray.com indicates it has.

But only by the time listed and not specifically. I quit buying DVDs in 2006 and only buy Blu-rays since

I suspect you are just trolling at this point. And the scene between Spock and Saavik is not listed on IMDB as "alternate footage" anywhere. Feel free to provide a link or screenshot if you contend I am wrong.

However, if you really want me to, I can certainly dig out my VHS copy of the film, pan-and-scan format and all, and show you that the Spock/Saavik scene was always there.

Either trolling or just one of those folks who simply cannot admit they are wrong about stuff -- even when their claim is 100% disproven. If I had a buck for every time I had to say "I was dead wrong about that!" -- I would buy myself some nice steaks to dine on. Everybody remembers stuff wrong -- what's the big deal?

i just think its weird that tv channels and even on streaming apps they constantly show like extended versions of movies or at times edit scenes like the statue moment in Naked gun whenever its airing on one of the Amazon Prime Video LIve channels

Then go buy a copy on VHS, Beta or DVD if you're unhappy with what you can get OTA or streaming.

Compare it to when they looped in Vulcan in TMP and they made it sound much closer to mish mashed English. With TWOK I would never have guessed.

I think the bigger contribution was that they restructured the conversation in the subtitles substantially in TWOK, while they just used the original dialog for the subtitles in TMP (they rephrased it a bit for the DE, but if you already know what they're saying, it's hard to know how much that helps). There's also the lack of catchphrases; I don't think there's anything they could put in the subtitles to hide the cadence of the priest saying "live long and prosper."

I own the VHS and the Director's Edition/Deluxe Edition DVD from 2002. Between those home video hardcopy editions and the streaming cuts I get all the versions of TWOK I want to see.

yes that is the scene i am talking about. it was never in the original theatrical version of the movie back then.

that scene popped up in a huge deal for the 2002-2003 DVD special deluxe editions. PERIOD. it was never ever in the old movie back then in the 1980s
I saw it in 1982 in the theatre. YES, the scene WAS there in the theatre ON RELEASE.

The Spock and Saavik scene was most DEFINITELY in the original 1982 theatrical and mid-1980s pay cable TV cuts.

Then go buy a copy on VHS, Beta or DVD if you're unhappy with what you can get OTA or streaming.
I would challenge one to find anything BUT the theatrical cut OTA or streaming. (You can rent or buy the Director's Cut.)

Of course (as we have mentioned) this is no edition that does not have Spock and Saavik talking to each other in Vulcan.

Are any of the Director's cuts (I,II, and VI) available on streaming (not purchase or rent) OTHER than the Motion Picture? And TMP is ONLY available as the DE.
