Something I noticed in the Riverside Shipyards scene

USSPhilippi

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Went for my 4th viewing of Trek this evening, and probably last before it comes out on DVD. (Not in a rush to upgrade to Blu-Ray, I've got other debts to pay off before that can happen.)

Anyway, to the subject line. Just as the Riverside Shipyards scene fades out to "three years later" and Nero waiting for Spock Prime, I spotted a "1701" on the starship under construction at Riverside. Confirmation that it is indeed the Enterprise. Now I know this may be Captain Obvious to some of you, but I do recall reading some speculation that it might be a different ship...

Dear Captain Obvious, the whole scene is about the shine in Kirk's eyes when he first sees her -- his one and only true love affair.

And there literally is light in Kirk's eyes in that scene. Love at first sight.

I hope they play up that love affair in the next movie big time as in Enterprise vs Megan Fox = no contest for James T Kirk, after bedding Megan Fox he just dumps her for the ship :D

I wish we'd gotten a longer, more revealing shot of the Ent under construction when the shuttle was lifting off.

*smacking forehead*
You know, that never even dawned on me. OF COURSE thats what that scene was about. I swear, sometimes i can be so retarded!
Damn! I wish i could see the movie again, now that you've said that. It would be a whole different thing now, seeing that seen with those eyes!!

Yeoman Randi, don't be so hard on yourself. Have you read the book yet? There is a little more about his reaction in the text version.

I know, I saw it. Shame, if they'd left that out we could've gone on believing the Enterprise was built in San Francisco.

Yup, I saw it in the theater too. Very briefly during the cross-fade into the next scene - it was aft on one of the nacelles. Definitely the 1701.

I heard the tribble the first night; but I didn't see it for a long time -- like 10 or 15th time. Don't know how I kept missing it. They must have good camouflage.

I think I heard it like the 2nd or 3rd time. And I still couldn't find it, or I'd flat out forget to look until it was too late and Spock and Kirk were already in Scotty's shuttle pod thingy.

JERI, no i havent read the book. Sad to say i have never been able to get into the novelizations or any of the Star Trek books for that matter. And i have tried, believe me! I don't know what it is about them that i just cannot connect with them.

I heard the tribble my first viewing but i didn't make the connection (seriously, i obviously have some synapses that arent firing), realized the second time it was a tribble cooing, so to speak, and by my third viewing still didnt see it.

When that DVD comes out i swear, i will probably go frame by frame with this movie!

Yeah those Blu-ray players are expensive, I saw one at Wal-mart for $98 !!! Ninety-eight !!

Do they think movie fans are millionaires?

I noticed that the first time I saw the movie.

Well aren't you clever

Yes he sure is!!

He notices every single thing about every single movie the first time he sees it---without exception.

Because of course, there is only one thing to see in any given shot of a movie.

But honey, I'm only a man, HE'S Popo Bawa!!!"

More than anything else, this scene and the "three years later" fade prove that Kirk enters the Academy(in THIS timeline anyways)at age 22 in 2255 and that he does indeed last three years at the Academy much the way he told Pike he would.
