Something I’d like to see in SNW: Cardassia!

At the same time, Deep Space Nine is near Cardassian space and the station is called Deep Space Nine for a reason.
good point: it’s deep space nine, not deep space ninety, so it’s likely not that far from earth.

Putting those two things together: I think the Federation could've known about the Cardassians as early as the 22nd Century (yes, I said it, and bear in mind I'm a non-fan of ENT), but wouldn't have had much reason to deal with them until their borders started butting heads with the Cardassians', leading to the Border Wars.
exactly. The old books chronology (which is not canon, but still) put the first contact around 2293, but there is no reason it couldn’t have happened earlier.

My assumption is that when the Federation names a starbase Deep Space # it means its outside of Federation borders and not literally always in deep space.

Question is what would they be. We know they have warp, but will they be mostly confined to their system or around the same level as where they were in the 24th century? Or somewhere in between?

In fact, Deep Space 9 could not have been in deep space, since it was in the Bajoran star system in orbit of Bajor's star, B'hava'el.
