Some Trek help if possible

I have been a star trek fan for a few years now but not massively until now. I have watched the odd episode here and there but never really got massive into it like I said
Anyways my fiancée’s brother is a HUGE trekkie fan and has all movies and series on DVD but he also had all the films on video also.
Knowing I was a sci-fi fan and massive Dr Who fan he gave me all the videos which I have now watched and liked them all but I am now at a bit of a sticking block as I don’t know what to watch next.I watched the new film that came out this year 2009 and just don’t know where to go next.

I really fancy watching some Star Trek tonight but do I start at the original series and work from my time 60’s up to enterprise in the 2000’s or do I go in some other order.

I put this down to the reason I have not watched as much as I would have liked as somewhat of a new trekkie it’s a bit daunting even for a 31 year old like me.

Also thought i would join the forum for soem advice/helo and general Trek conversation and discussion.
 
Why don't you watch the pilots of each series and see which series seems best?
It would make sense to start with TOS and move on up, I would start there if I were you.
 
Personally, there's no right order to watch Trek. Sample around and decide whatever you like. I mean apparently there are people who like Voyager more than TNG. I never cared for TOS though I do respect it and the original cast. I'm more of a TNG/VOY fan.

Thanks for the advice, i always liked the look of TNG so will watch the first episode online tonight and then if im grabbed like i think i will be ill watch that first.

It's good advice though to pick what crew and feel you like in the series and just proceed from there. If it seems boring skip ahead a season if you're on the first season of any of them. First seasons can be a bit slower.

You could pick a series, say TNG (and the pilot is not very good, don't judge it on that) and watch it consecutively. When you want a little break you could watch random episodes from the other series. DS9 and the third season of ENT are more story arc oriented, as in you really need to follow from the beginning. VOY and TOS are quite self contained for the most part and you could easily just watch an ep here or there and enjoy it. If you want to dip into TOS there are some classic episodes that would be a great introduction.

I am always watching one (or two at the moment, ack) Trek series consecutively at any given time. I like doing it that way. However we do watch quite a few VOY episodes which are favorites throughout the year. Pretty much every two part VOY episode is excellent, a very enjoyable evening. I can't think how many times we've watched Future's End.

Anyway I realize it may be daunting.. that's how I feel about Dr. Who!! Though I like the look of the new Doctor Who so may just start watching there. You have a great journey ahead of you, so much Trek.. you will love at least some of it!

It was definitely David Tennant. Did he only last a short time? I saw a few excellent, very Twilight Zoneish eps with him. I was impressed by the production and acting and music.

I would not say too short a time as he played him for 3 series with a year of specials but certainly too short a time for me and other WHo fans as David Tennant was amazing.

If you are looking to start watching start at this christmas specials "The end of time" part one was on christmas day but you could watch it on the BBC Iplayer as it will be there till Tommorow or Friday and then the second part of that is Davids last episode where he generates into the 11th Doctor Matt Smith so from then on will be a new doctor and fresh start.

I think Matt will be good also but if you get the chance watch an episode with David called "Blink" its possibly the best dr who episode of all time.
 
Well for me, I wanted to watch them in order - so I started with TOS, then moved onto the 1st season of TNG.

I got the movies for Christmas, so I've been watching them before heading back to TNG. There's plenty of seasons of that to get through though, so I'm just going to take my time :)
 
I would strongly advise that you not get into Star Trek because it is going to be damaging to your social life and it will eat up a considerable amount of your internet time, but if you insist...

One of the things about the Star Trek franchise is that each of the series, and even many of the episodes, are independent from one another and you can watch them in any old order. There's only one time when a story develops over two or more series and that is the story which introduced the Maquis; it began on TNG, then DS9 took it over and then TNG explored it again in their penultimate episode. Oh, and Voyager used the Maquis as part of its premise, but you can still watch that show without understanding what the Maquis are about.

TNG was the most mainstream of the Star Trek series and the most successful show in terms of ratings, which is ironic since it is the most talky and the least action-packed. Mostly episodic but there are some story arcs such as Picard's relationship to the Borg and the Klingon civil war. Do not judge this show by its first season, it is one of the worst seasons in televisual history. If you have trouble with the first episode then only watch these episodes:

Season 1
The Naked Now (For Data/Yar & Picard/Crusher. It's only 42 minutes of your life, and two of those are credits.)
Where No One Has Gone Before (Explains the Traveller)
Hide and Q (Not very good, but part of the Q story)
Datalore (Introduction of Lore)
11001001
Coming of Age (To better understand Conspiracy)
Heart of Glory
Skin of Evil (For what happens to Yar)
Conspiracy
The Neutral Zone (Beginning of the Borg mystery, reintroduction of the Romulans)

Season 2
Where Silence Has Lease
Elementary Dear Data (Dr Moriarty returns later)
A Matter of Honour
The Measure of a Man
Contagion (The Iconians are mentioned later on DS9)
Time Squared
Q Who
Samaritan Snare (Feel free to fast forward the Pakled parts)
The Emissary (Important for Worf's arc)

Then feel free to skip ahead to season 3, which is when the show hit its stride. :)

Maybe one should see The Naked Now, as awful as it is, in order to understand Data/Yar references in episodes like The Measure of A Man and Legacy?

Or... if there's too much of a danger of being put off by that episode... just read the synopsis online.

Excellent list, although, like ElfEars suggested, I'd add in The Naked Now, for both it's tie-in to Measure of a Man and TOS's The Naked Time.

I guess you're right, that episode is sort of important later, and it is the basis of the Picard/Crusher 'ship. But the OP should wear protective goggles while watching it.
 
I have started with the two pilots, and am even writting a blog on it (link in signature) thanks for all the comments as i have now chosen a path on how i will be watching them.
 
Every once in a while look up from the TV screen and join us on the BBS. The conversation is always lively and new ideas are always welcome.
