Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously)

MNM

Captain
Captain
I couldnt see another thread about this, and didnt really want to put my spoiler laden thoughts in the thread discussing only the extracts of the book from Star Trek magazine as it seemed wrong.

My copy came today, and having read it, I liked it. Though it didnt seem as long as I thought it might have been, so I managed to zip through it in a few hours.

I liked how it showed the aftermath of the Borg invasions, showing how desperate the situation was for the Federation in many areas. I hadnt realised this book was set before "A Singular Destiny", and I had, at the time, thought that book hadnt really shown the aftermath enough, choosing more to focus on the introduction of the Typhon Pact, but I think that book reads better now, knowing this book deals with the stuff I expected SD to deal with.

Having liked Trys Chen from the moment I read her in Greater Than The Sum, I felt sorry for her about her mother.

I'm still not a huge fan of the Choudhury character, so I couldnt bring myself to overally care about her stuff, but it wasnt bad.

And, for a moment, I actually thought Picard would accept the promotion to Admiral he was offered at the end. I had visions of him chilling on the Enterprise with his new rank, darting around the Federation helping alleviate the crisis. But I suppose he'll never accept such a thing.

Good book.

You have "Losing the Peace"? Curse my geographical location! I'll have to wait weeks yet... :(

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

^The first twelve chapters are on the S&S website (for some odd reason)

Aye, it came from the Book Depository today. Much better than their service with Over a Torrent Sea (that being the only other Trek book I had pre ordered with them that has come out since I started using them), which they still list as out of stock months later...

I looked around there, and it's not actually the whole chapters, it's just the first few pages of each one.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

Type in page numbers sequentially...it's the whole chapters.

Quite possibly the most celebrated and decorated Captain in the history of the Fleet specifically told him to NOT accept that promotion, so he's already gotten a second opinion from someone that tried it and didn't like it... ;)

MNM, you tease.

Your "spoiler laden thoughts" are clearly being kept far too closely to your own chest.

And at least this contributor would be more than happy to be laden with more of them.

More please!

Well I know he was told that. Plus he quotes what Kirk told him to the admiral who offers him the position. However, at the point in the story, and in the general Star Trek universe, having beaten the Borg, showing what the after efects of that were, and having Picard now married with a kid on the way and having himself say it was a new start and a new universe, for a moment, I thought he might accept it and allow himself a new start.

Hmm... well for you my friend, below are more spoilers:

Risa is confirmed to be completely dead.

We get loads of refugees being placed on Pacifica, and that camp deteriating in standards and quality. With the native people of Pacifica not being overally happy at helping as it takes up the valuable land they need for their kids.

It was discovered that Deneva had a plan (plan 2757) to ship a bunch of people out on a museum ship (in the event of an invasion), so there are survivors of that planet, the vice president being one of them, and he wants Picard to take him to earth to petition the president to start a rebuilding of Deneva.

There is then rioting on Alpha Centuri (due to there being a few refugees there) and Picard is ordered there, and it turns out the governor of Alpha Centuri tells Picard they are going to have a vote to see if they want to leave the Federation, because he found out that during the Borg war, Starfleet said that if Earth fell the war was over, and this pissed the govenor off as he felt that Starfleet didnt care about those systems outside of Sol.

In the end Picard takes both the govenor and the vice president to Pacifica to show them what the true effects of the war are. which gets him in trouble with the admiralty, and a ship is sent to arrest Picard for "kidnap" etc..

Images get out of the camp on Pacifica, with an address by the Alpha centuri govenor, basically saying how stupid he was to be annoyed. this goes some way in helping command see Picard shouldnt be in too much trouble and admiral Akaar arrives on a Vesta class ship (alas not the Aventine :( )

Picard gets offered a promotion, though turns it down, telling akaar what Kirk told him, though not mentioning any names, this gets Akaar to roll his eyes and ask "what fool told you that", after being told it was that fool Kirk, it shuts Akaar up.

The guy who gets the promotion instead is DeSoto.

The epilogue mentions both the formation of the Typhon pact and the events from the end of Voyager: Full Cirlce.

I've not even read Greater than the Sum or The Destiny Trilogy yet and people are now getting, what six books ahead of me :(

Yes.

Move over into the slow lane and let us pass, please.

Slow lane! I'm in the garage!

Not necessarily the worst place to be considering the rampaging humvees heading down the road of this thread (of which I am one).

Edited: of which I am the ONLY one so far - but believe me we are on our way!

Haha! No more Risa? Whatever is the galaxy to do?

Any insights (read spoilers) you have to offer of the Crusher storyline or (and I admit to being entirely self-serving and single-minded in this request) the baby?

Well, Argelius is okay, I think, so hedonistic holidaymakers are fine. :) The Risians and others who lived on Risa might not be so easily placated, of course...:(

The baby won't be here yet. We'll have to wait for the "Typhon Pact" series to meet him, I think.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

Well I will be on the lookout tomorrow evening when I stop by B&N before work. I'm hoping they will have it like they normally do.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

Alas, not yet. It is difficult to support local vendors when they are so far behind every one else!
