Some Irrationality In Movies

Okay, this is the kind of irrationality I mean that you commonly see in movies.

Godzilla is the prime example.

Godzilla is pretty much immune to all conventional weapons any military has to send against him.

If you were a soldier, why would anyone want to follow orders to go attack him when it is pretty much a death sentence? Godzilla is a force of nature with massive quantities of destruction.

Sorry, but if I were a soldier, this is one order i'd disobey.

You're part of a security force of fifty men. You see a guy who is a real bad ass who goes through forty three of them.

Are you going to try to go attack him?\

Me, I'd put up my hands and back away. If he's a good guy with a sense of honor he would accept that surrender. However, I would not help him in his endeavors, and again, iog he is a good guy with a sense of honor he would not use torture to force the answer out of me.

If he had powers like telepathy and mind reading, that would be a bit different.



You see, ti always baffles me to see these guys just mindlessly attack attack attack.

While i realize it's for the sake of the story so the good guy can flex his muscles, in reality, I just cna't see this sort of thing. I'm sure there are some who would realize the situation and use their intelligence.

They did just that in Iron Man 3. It was hilarious and refreshing!

Any well trained soldier wouldn't run away and save himself when a giant monster is destroying his city. And besides, if you run Ned Stark cuts your head off.

A better question is, why would they order men to their deaths when it has no chance of producing any strategic gain.

They did just that in Iron Man 3. It was hilarious and refreshing!

Agreed. That's my favorite part of the entire Iron Man series: "Honestly, I hate working here. They are so weird."

Or how about in chop socky movies where the main martial arts good guy is facing down a group of ten or so bad guy opponents. One will attack while the others dance menacingly around him, waiting for their turn to charge in and get their asses kicked.

Good point! Good martial arts aside, they always seem rather unreal in that regard.

Okay, I think you're right, but, i still don't understand why bother when it's a completely fruitless endeavor.

The only possible use i can see is that of a distraction to help evacuate the civilians, but I don't recall every seeing that happen in the movies. They mostly seem to attack Godzilla after the city is empty and at night.

Why, it's almost as if the whole monster-mashing franchise, up to and including the Edwards reboot, is a childish corruption of a mournful and allegorical one-off story, and that there's no reason to continue said series beyond a craven cash grab off some easy brand-name recognition.

And, if anyone cares to go back into the archives, I argued at length last year that setting up a post-apocalyptic colony in San Francisco rather than, oh, a town across the Bay with considerably warmer weather and natural fresh water sources is barking madness... that was a fun little give-and-take. Good times.

I wasn't going to criticize so much as suggest Jirin go back and review battles from most of the major wars ever fought. Plenty of examples of men ordered to their death with no chance of strategic gain.
